A new study from University College London (UCL) indicates that shedding a modest amount of weight in middle age can significantly improve cardiovascular health. The research suggests that losing just 5% of body weight can lower inflammation and reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease.

The findings challenge the common assumption that weight gain is an inevitable part of aging or that significant weight loss is required to see health benefits. Instead, the data shows that small, manageable changes can have a profound impact on long-term well-being.

    UCL Study Results

Researchers analyzed data from more than 6,000 individuals born in the UK in 1958. The team tracked participants’ body mass index (BMI) and identified the highest BMI each person reached by age 42. They then examined whether these individuals had lost or gained at least 5% of their weight by age 50 and if they maintained that difference by age 55.

By age 62, the metabolic and cardiovascular health of those who had lost weight in their 40s and 50s closely resembled that of adults who had maintained a healthy weight throughout their lives. Both groups showed comparable levels of cholesterol, blood pressure, and inflammation markers.

Charis Bridger-Staatz, the study’s lead author and a senior research fellow in population health at UCL, emphasized that aging does not have to mean inevitable health decline. “Just a modest reduction in weight in people’s 50s may make a real difference to their health, potentially improving their quality of life and reducing their risk of heart issues,” she said.

    Implications for Prevention

The study highlights the importance of targeting prevention efforts at older adults, not just children and young people. Bridger-Staatz noted that thousands of lives could be lost in the next decade due to health issues related to being overweight or obese. “While obesity prevention strategies rightly place strong emphasis on children and young people, these findings indicate that prevention efforts should also extend to people in their 50s,” she added.

Laura Gimeno, a co-author of the study, pointed out that the benefits of weight loss extend beyond short-term reduction. She suggested that the findings support expanding access to effective weight-loss support, including medications. “They also highlight the importance of reducing further weight gain in midlife, as this was consistently linked to the fastest deterioration in heart and metabolic health,” Gimeno said.

While the study is observational and cannot prove cause and effect, it adds to growing evidence that modest weight changes can yield significant health improvements. The research underscores that it is never too late to start making changes to improve cardiovascular and metabolic health.
