A documentary chronicling the history of BioWare is now serving as a final tribute to the legendary game developer following the recent closure of the studio by parent company Electronic Arts. The film, titled Massive Effect: The BioWare Story, had been in production for two years before the shutdown announcement, according to Deadline.
Massive Effect: The BioWare Story
Writer and director Akash Sherman described the project as a “profound valediction” in light of the studio’s closure. Sherman, who called the BioWare founders his “hometown heroes,” stated that the golden era of the studio inspired him and a generation of gamers. He noted the privilege and responsibility of sharing the journey of the underdogs who created deeply beloved storytelling.
The documentary features interviews with the studio’s founders, Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip. It also includes perspectives from prominent developers such as Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah, David Gaider, Drew Karpyshyn, Aaryn Flynn, Mac Walters, Trent Oster, James Ohlen, and Caroline Livingstone. Voice actor Jennifer Hale and former EA CEO John Riccitello are also featured, along with Douglas Reilly, vice president of Lucasfilm Games.
Founders Respond to the Film
Muzyka and Zeschuk released a statement expressing their honor at being asked to tell the BioWare story. They emphasized that the studio was never just about a logo or a building, but about emotionally engaging stories and characters brought to life by talented teams and partners. They praised the passionate fans who championed those worlds and carried them forward.
“We’re proud this film honors those who made it all possible,” the founders said. “The best stories never really end. They live on in our memories and wait for someone to pick them up again.”
The film is scheduled for release next year. Meanwhile, composer Sam Hulick has shared a re-scored version of the leaked trailer for the Mass Effect Universe as a personal farewell. Amazon’s Mass Effect TV series remains in development.
