As concerns over unrestricted smartphone access for children grow, a diverse market of kid-safe phones has emerged to address parental anxiety. These devices range from modified smartphones with heavy software restrictions to minimalist landlines and screen-free gadgets. According to TechCrunch, the primary goal across these products is to provide communication capabilities while removing or strictly limiting access to the open internet, social media, and app stores.

    Smartphones with Advanced Monitoring

Some companies offer devices that resemble standard smartphones but run on heavily modified operating systems. The Bark Phone, built on Samsung Galaxy hardware, is a prominent example. It allows calls and texts only with approved contacts. The device continuously scans messages, emails, and photos for signs of cyberbullying, grooming, or other dangers, sending alerts to parents. A key feature is the ability to gradually unlock web browsing and apps as the child matures. The standard model costs $240, with wireless plans starting at $29 per month.

Pinwheel offers a similar approach with a focus on customizable routines. Parents can create different modes for the day, such as limiting the phone to calling and navigation during school hours. The device starts around $119, and the Caregiver Portal subscription is $14.99 per month. Pinwheel also recently launched landline options and a smartwatch. Teracube, which launched in 2022, uses its Thrive OS to filter web browsing and set app-specific limits. It is often recommended for older children due to its traditional smartphone features. The device sells for $99, with plans starting at $35 per month.

    Minimalist and Screen-Free Options

Other companies take a different approach by eliminating online risks entirely. Gabb phones do not include a browser, app store, or social media. Instead, they offer calling, texting, and a curated selection of preloaded apps. The company also provides a worry-free music streaming library. Phone prices start around $159.99, with cellular service beginning at $24.99 per month. Optional services like Gabb Guard help block spam calls.

For parents who prefer to keep phones out of the bedroom, home-based solutions are gaining traction. Ooma MyPhone is a kid-focused home phone that replaces the traditional landline. It allows calls only between approved contacts through its Trusted Circle feature and provides scheduled Quiet Hours. The service costs $99.99 for the phone and $7.99 per month for service. Tin Can offers a Wi-Fi connected home phone with a distinctive design. It connects via Wi-Fi rather than a phone jack and allows calls to approved contacts. A plan for calls to all approved contacts costs $9.99 per month.

New entrants are also testing the market with screen-free hardware. Waffle recently opened preorders for its Waffle Home landline at $119 and the Waffle Go, a portable device resembling a walkie-talkie, for $169. These devices allow voice calls and notes but remove screens entirely. TextNow has also entered the space with Yello!, a touchscreen smartphone that lacks an app store or unrestricted web access. Parents can monitor location and control games and contacts. The device is designed to look like a normal smartphone while maintaining strict safety boundaries.

The market for safe mobile phones continues to expand as parents look for tools to balance connectivity with security. Each brand offers a different balance of features, from advanced content monitoring to complete screen removal, allowing families to choose the level of restriction that fits their needs.
