Air Canada is expanding its transatlantic network by introducing the Airbus A321XLR to secondary Canadian markets. The Montreal-based carrier will begin operating the long-range narrowbody jet from Ottawa and Halifax to London Heathrow starting in December 2026. This move marks a strategic shift for the airline, which is using the aircraft to bridge the gap between short-haul efficiency and long-haul reach.

Ottawa to London Service Begins December 16

The first leg of this expansion launches on December 16, 2026, when Air Canada operates its inaugural A321XLR flight from Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport to London Heathrow. According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, the westbound journey from London to Ottawa can take up to eight hours. This route will operate three times a week through late March.

Once the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Summer Schedule begins in March, the airline will switch to the Airbus A330-300 for this route. The larger widebody jet will increase capacity to four flights per week during the peak travel season. This seasonal rotation demonstrates how the A321XLR serves as a cost-effective tool for maintaining service when demand is lower.

Halifax Route Replaces Boeing 737 MAX 8

One day after the Ottawa launch, on December 17, Air Canada will introduce the A321XLR on the Halifax Stanfield International Airport to London Heathrow route. This deployment replaces the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and represents a longer-term commitment to the aircraft on this corridor. The airline plans to fly the route four times a week initially, increasing to daily service when the summer schedule takes effect.

Halifax serves as the primary long-haul gateway for Atlantic Canada, making it a popular destination for transatlantic traffic. The switch to the A321XLR is scheduled to last until at least August 2027. This route allows the carrier to offer more frequent and efficient service to a key regional hub without relying on larger, less flexible aircraft.

Toronto Daytime Rotation and Fleet Details

Air Canada will also reintroduce a daytime rotation from Toronto Pearson International Airport to London Heathrow starting March 28. These daily flights provide an alternative to the airline’s usual overnight services. During the summer peak, Air Canada will operate five flights per day on this corridor, utilizing a mix of A321XLR, A330, and 777 aircraft.

The A321XLR features a two-class cabin layout designed for comfort on long flights. The business class section includes 14 Signature suites with a 1-1 seating configuration, 19-inch entertainment screens, and wireless charging. Economy class accommodates 168 passengers in Collins Aerospace Meridian+ slimline seats. Most seats offer 31 inches of pitch, with extra legroom available in rows 13 through 15 and rows 19 and 20.

Airbus has highlighted the aircraft’s efficiency, noting a 30% reduction in fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation narrowbodies. The plane can also operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Air Canada has taken delivery of three A321XLRs from an order of 30, with the first jet handed over in April 2026. The aircraft joins a growing global fleet that includes operators such as Iberia, Aer Lingus, American Airlines, and United Airlines.
