James, a 34-year-old researcher, and Michelle, a 30-year-old radio presenter, met for a blind date dinner at Duchy in London EC2. The evening, which took place on a Tuesday night, featured conversations about their shared university experiences in Birmingham, their tastes in music and comedy, and a notable slip of the tongue regarding names.

A name mix-up and vegetarian boundaries

The date began with James noting Michelle’s warm and relaxed energy, which he found immediately comforting. Their conversation covered a wide range of topics, including reality television, dancing, and football. However, the most memorable moment for James occurred when he accidentally addressed Michelle by the wrong name.

“Embarrassingly, I accidentally called her Melissa,” James said. “Sorry!” He later described Michelle as easy-going and forgiving for handling the error with grace. He also noted that she possessed good table manners, even when she encouraged him to try her steak tartare despite his vegetarian diet.

Michelle, for her part, found James to be wonderfully articulate. She appreciated his ability to hold an engaging and thoughtful conversation, describing him as chatty and mildly funny, though she admitted a couple of his jokes did not land as intended.

Music, madeleines, and a broken heel

Food was a central theme of their discussion, with a particular focus on madeleines. Both participants expressed a mutual love for discovering new music, which they found to be a strong common ground. Michelle described herself as bubbly and gregarious, hoping James found her to be fun and natural in her demeanor.

The evening concluded without a second date, largely due to timing constraints. James, who had worked late, was tired and had missed the Champions League games on television. Michelle, meanwhile, dealt with a minor wardrobe malfunction at the end of the night when one of her heels broke off.

“I’d definitely swap out my footwear,” Michelle said regarding what she would change about the date. James wished the timing had been earlier, allowing him to avoid the post-work fatigue and perhaps extend the evening beyond his usual bedtime.

The Guardian’s blind date column pairs strangers for dinner and drinks, after which they answer a set of questions about their experience. The column has been running since 2009, offering readers a glimpse into the dynamics of modern dating. James and Michelle both agreed they would introduce each other to their friends, citing their easy rapport and shared interests as the primary reasons.
