The first official trailer for Death Stranding Isolations has been released, offering the first look at the upcoming anime series based on Hideo Kojima’s video game universe. The trailer, which dropped on Oct. 30, introduces a new narrative that diverges from the main video game storyline.
New Characters and Story
Death Stranding Isolations is an original net anime that will feature different protagonists from Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The first trailer shows one of the two main characters, a girl with blonde hair. She is tormented by visions of Beached Things (BTs), the souls of the dead that are stranded in the world of the living.
The anime’s subtitle is “My mom became a crater,” a reference to the voidouts, the massive explosions triggered when a BT consumes a human. This detail highlights the unique lore of the Death Stranding universe, where the boundaries between the world of the living and the afterlife have deteriorated following a cataclysmic event.
Production Team and Release
Death Stranding Isolations will be animated by E&H Production, a relatively new animation studio founded by MAPPA veteran Sunghoo Park. Park’s credits include Ninja Kamui and the upcoming Magic Knight Rayearth remake. The series will be directed by Takyuki Sano, an industry veteran making his directorial debut. Sano’s previous work includes Attack on Titan: The Last Attack and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The screenplay comes from Tow Ubukata, an award-winning novelist and screenwriter famous for Psycho-Pass 2 and 3.
The anime is expected to be released in 2027 exclusively on Disney Plus. This marks another expansion of the Death Stranding franchise into different media, as there are no current plans for a third mainline video game.
Expanding the Universe
Death Stranding Isolations is not the only project in the works for Kojima’s Death Stranding universe. Michael Sarnoski, who wrote and directed A Quiet Place: Day One, will write and direct a movie for A24 that will act as a prequel to the games. Another animated feature, tentatively titled Death Stranding Mosquito, is in the works, with Aaron Guzikowski attached to write and Hiroshi Miyamoto as director. A first trailer for Mosquito was released in September.
In the original Death Stranding game, players take control of Sam Porter Bridges, played by Norman Reedus, a courier who has to deliver supplies to isolated colonies of survivors and try to reconnect the United States by building a wireless network. In the sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Sam and his companions set out on an expedition to Australia.
