A journalist in London has found that removing Instagram from her phone has fundamentally changed how she experiences the world. After a year away from the platform, she reports that her life is quieter, more private, and significantly more creative.

The decision came after a trip to Sri Lanka last year, which served as a breaking point. While visiting ancient heritage sites and hiking Sigiriya, a rock fortress inhabited since prehistoric times, her first thought was not about the history or the view. It was about how to frame the moment for her followers.

The Obsession with an Invisible Audience

She had downloaded Instagram at age 17. For years, she viewed herself as a moderate user compared to others. She avoided TikTok and Snapchat, posting less frequently than many peers. However, during her university years, her habits shifted. She began replacing essay writing and reading with hours spent curating posts.

Even simple moments, like watching a sunset on the way home from work, became tasks. She would spend time trying to capture the “artsiest” photo, imagining an eager audience waiting for another image of the Earth rotating. The aftermath of posting was often a cycle of anxious reloading, checking for likes and comments.

Upon returning from Sri Lanka, she posted several photos. This triggered hours of scrolling and self-doubt. With only 400 followers, she worried they were punishing her for being boring or ugly. She questioned whether she should delete the posts or redo them. The mental load became too heavy to sustain.

    Reclaiming Personal Moments

She decided to delete the app for one month to reset her habits. The absence of the platform brought immediate realizations. She recognized that much of her photography was driven by a desire to appeal to people she had not spoken to in years.

Without the app, she started taking photos for her own memories. This shift allowed her experiences to belong to her again. The one-month break extended to three, then six, and eventually a full year. The background noise of social comparison decreased substantially.

She did not become productive every minute. However, she redirected the energy she once spent comparing her normal life to the seemingly perfect lives of others. She read more and finished her first novel, while also starting a new one.

Living privately has proven liberating. Although she is not a public figure, she discovered the joy of reconnecting with anonymity. Activities are now enjoyed for their own sake, without the need for external validation. Moments matter because she is present in them, not because they have been liked by hundreds of strangers.

Her life feels smaller in some ways, but much more like her own. She remains fully present during experiences, avoiding the distraction of social media rabbit holes. Whether her former followers have noticed her absence is irrelevant. She no longer cares.
