Sam Wasson has released a comprehensive new biography of Frank Capra, aiming to dismantle the perception that the legendary director’s work was defined by shallow sentimentality. The 752-page book, titled Frank Capra, arrives on October 27 and offers a detailed examination of the filmmaker whose name has become synonymous with heartfelt American storytelling.

Wasson, a noted Hollywood historian known for his works on Francis Ford Coppola and Roman Polanski, argues that modern audiences have developed a “shame around the idea of a happy ending.” He suggests this cultural shift has led to a dismissal of Capra’s most famous works, including It’s a Wonderful Life, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

    Reevaluating the Capra Myth

The biography serves as a direct counterpoint to Joseph McBride’s 1992 book, The Catastrophe of Success. McBride’s work was highly critical, focusing on Capra’s personal hypocrisies and his conduct during the Red Scare. Wasson describes McBride’s approach as “relentlessly prosecutorial,” arguing that it reduced a complex human being to a collection of flaws.

“Therapists talk about mental health as integration, holding the good with the bad,” Wasson explained. “Joseph McBride discovered some very painful things about Capra which are true, and that became the entirety of his view about the man.” Wasson contends that while Capra did engage in self-mythologizing, the core of that mythology was accurate.

Wasson asserts that the label “Capra-corn” lacks merit. He describes the director’s films as “dark and triumphant,” noting that they often explore profound struggles before reaching a resolution. According to Wasson, Capra understood that audiences crave well-told stories about people, a quality he believes is increasingly rare in modern cinema.

    Capra’s Enduring Influence

Despite Capra’s status as a three-time Academy Award winner for Best Director, Wasson notes that his influence on contemporary American filmmakers is limited. He points to Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial as rare examples of this influence, though even those connections are not direct.

Wasson identifies the television series Friday Night Lights as a more significant modern link to Capra’s style. He describes the show as having a “warm view of humanity that led in the darkness,” mirroring the emotional depth found in Capra’s work. “We don’t go to the movies to see people anymore,” Wasson said. “We go to the movies to see spectacle. Watching Capra is about people looking at people looking inside people.”

The biography traces Capra’s journey from a Sicilian village to East Los Angeles and eventually to the heights of Columbia Pictures. It provides a detailed look at the Golden Age of Hollywood, featuring anecdotes about figures like Mack Sennett and the social scene at Chasen’s restaurant. Wasson positions Capra as “America’s director,” whose own rags-to-riches immigrant story reflects the ideals of leadership and optimism that he championed in his films.

As the book hits shelves, it invites viewers to reconsider the emotional weight of Capra’s legacy. Wasson’s work suggests that the director’s focus on human connection and idealism remains relevant, particularly in a time when public trust in leadership and institutions is low. “We are down on America right now,” Wasson observed. “Capra represents these things when they’re working and shows us why we need them.”
