Peter, a lorry driver from Lancashire, has spent the last three years learning to read and write. He reached this milestone at age 42, a journey that began with a moment of panic in a supermarket aisle during the pandemic lockdowns. His story highlights the challenges faced by adults with undiagnosed literacy issues and the impact of targeted support programs.

The Supermarket Crisis That Sparked Change

In 2021, Peter was 42 years old and had the reading ability of a four-year-old. He had worked for 25 years as a lorry driver, relying on visual memory to navigate motorway routes and memorize numbers. His wife managed all written communication, from bills to school letters. The pandemic disrupted this balance. With schools closed and his wife homeschooling their 10-year-old son, Peter could no longer hide his inability to help with homework.

The breaking point came while shopping for groceries. Peter needed to find a milk alternative for his wife and son, who were both allergic to dairy and soy. He stood in the aisle, overwhelmed by the labels, terrified of buying the wrong product and harming his family. He realized his previous coping strategies were no longer sufficient. He told his wife about his struggle, and she introduced him to the Read Easy charity.

    Overcoming Barriers to Literacy

Peter was born partially deaf, which complicated his early education. He attended a special school where he struggled to concentrate due to noise and the behavioral needs of other students. By the time he left school at 16, he had no qualifications and a stammer caused by anxiety. He initially tried to learn at college but lacked the foundational skills to succeed. His parents encouraged him to work instead, and he eventually became a lorry driver, using his strong visual skills to map out routes without reading maps.

After meeting his wife in 2010, he relied on her for all reading tasks. When he finally connected with Read Easy, he met a volunteer named Alison. She used manuals created by the Shannon Trust to guide him. They met twice a week to work through the materials. Peter set a specific goal: to read the first Harry Potter book. He identified with the main character, who was also an outsider.

    Life After Literacy

Over three years, Peter mastered the basics of reading. He finished the Harry Potter book and now reads recipes to cook with his son. He has become an ambassador for Read Easy, encouraging other men to seek help despite feelings of shame. He is currently reading three books and plans to take his GCSE in English. He also hopes to change careers to support others in similar situations.

Peter’s experience is featured in the BBC Two program The Book That Changed My Life, which aired on October 14. His story demonstrates how adult literacy programs can transform lives, providing independence and confidence to those who missed out on education earlier in life.
