Mike Lynch’s Yacht Sinking Recap

On a seemingly routine voyage, the 56-meter Bayesian, a British-flagged super yacht, was anchored near the port of Porticello, Sicily, when it was struck by a sudden and severe storm early Monday morning. The storm’s ferocity generated waterspouts—powerful rotating columns of air and mist—that wreaked havoc on the vessel. The yacht’s massive 72-meter aluminum mast broke in half, causing the Bayesian to lose balance and ultimately sink.

Witnesses described the harrowing scene, with the yacht disappearing beneath the water at around 5:00 AM local time. Fishermen and nearby boats reported seeing distress flares and debris floating in the sea but no signs of the missing passengers. One witness, who saw the yacht sink with his own eyes, recounted the devastation as the luxury vessel vanished into the dark waters.

The Bayesian was a symbol of opulence and technological excellence. Built in 2008 by the renowned Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi, the yacht could accommodate up to 12 guests in six luxurious suites and had a crew of 10. The vessel, named after the Bayesian theory that formed the basis of Lynch’s PhD thesis and subsequent software empire, was not just a yacht but a floating testament to Lynch’s success in the tech world.

The yacht’s registered owner, Revtom Ltd, is based on the Isle of Man, with Angela Bacares listed as the sole legal owner. The Bayesian was available for rent for up to €195,000 per week, reflecting its status as one of the premier luxury yachts in the world.

The Missing and the Rescued of Mike Lynch Yacht Sinking

The Bayesian had 22 people on board, including 12 passengers and 10 crew members. Among the missing are Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who is the legal owner of the yacht, was one of the 15 people rescued. Tragically, the yacht’s cook was found dead, while the search continues for the remaining six missing individuals.

Charlotte Golunski, a British tourist who was on board with her husband and one-year-old daughter, was among the survivors. She described the terrifying experience of holding her daughter above the water to prevent her from drowning amidst the chaos. Her account of the event underscores the sheer panic and desperation felt by those who were fortunate enough to survive.

Charlotte Golunski saved her one-year-old baby, Sophie, by holding her afloat before they were rescued.

Ongoing Search and Rescue Efforts

Rescue operations have faced significant challenges due to the depth at which the Bayesian rests, approximately 50 meters below the sea surface, and the vessel’s precarious position at a 90-degree angle. Italian divers have been working tirelessly, though the conditions have limited their ability to fully access the wreck. According to Marco Tilotta, chief of the firefighters’ divers in Palermo, the divers have yet to enter the boat fully, with furniture and other obstacles hampering their progress.

Despite these difficulties, the search continues “incessantly,” with helicopters, patrol boats, and specialized diving teams from Rome, Sassari, and Cagliari joining the efforts. The Italian coastguard and Sicily’s civil protection agency are coordinating the operation, fearing that the missing passengers are likely trapped within the yacht’s wreckage.

The Legacy of Mike Lynch

Mike Lynch, often referred to as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” is a pivotal figure in the UK tech industry. He co-founded Autonomy, a software company that became a beacon of innovation in the late 1990s. Lynch’s career has been marked by both triumphs and controversies, including a recent acquittal of fraud charges related to the $11 billion sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The loss of the Bayesian and the uncertainty surrounding Lynch’s fate have cast a shadow over his legacy. As the world watches the unfolding tragedy, the search for Mike Lynch and the other missing passengers continues, with hopes fading but efforts undeterred.

The sinking of Mike Lynch’s yacht, the Bayesian, is a stark reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the fragility of human life. As rescue teams battle the elements to locate the missing, the world is left to ponder the loss of one of its most influential tech entrepreneurs and the others who remain unaccounted for.
