Rivian is preparing to expand its in-car artificial intelligence capabilities by allowing third-party AI agents to operate within its electric vehicles. The announcement came from founder and CEO RJ Scaringe during the TechCrunch Disrupt conference this week, marking a shift from the company’s current standalone assistant to a more open ecosystem.

While Rivian has already launched an AI assistant that allows drivers to control vehicle functions through voice commands, Scaringe indicated that the next phase involves integrating models from external technology firms. He specifically mentioned potential partnerships with companies such as Anthropic, noting that the carmaker aims to bring services like Claude into the vehicle’s software environment.

Rivian’s Agentic Framework and Cloud Routing

The integration relies on a proprietary framework developed in-house by Rivian. This system is designed to interpret user intent and route requests to the appropriate software component. Scaringe described the process as similar to a traffic light system, where the vehicle decides which model to use based on the complexity of the query.

Simple commands, such as adjusting the temperature or activating seat warmers, are handled by local models running on the vehicle’s edge hardware. More complex questions are routed to the cloud, where different models can be deployed. This architecture allows Rivian to maintain performance for immediate vehicle controls while accessing the broader capabilities of cloud-based AI for more demanding tasks.

As of May, the existing agent could already access external applications like Google Calendar. The upcoming expansion aims to deepen this connectivity by incorporating context from other devices. For example, a driver could ask the vehicle to prepare the seats for a guest and simultaneously request help planning a meal based on previous conversations held with an AI assistant on a smartphone.

    Safety Boundaries and Technical Challenges

Scaringe emphasized that safety remains a primary constraint in this expansion. He stated that vehicle-level controls, such as braking and steering, will not be handed over to AI agents. The company is implementing strict boundaries to ensure that autonomous decision-making does not interfere with critical driving functions.

Implementing these features requires significant coordination with external AI labs to establish the necessary infrastructure. Scaringe noted that there is extensive “plumbing” that must be built to ensure these agents function reliably within the car’s software environment. The company declined to provide a specific launch date for third-party agents, pointing instead to an “AI & Autonomy Day” event scheduled for December.

This move places Rivian in competition with other automakers exploring similar technologies. Tesla recently introduced features that allow users to interact with Grok, a chatbot developed by SpaceX, within its vehicles. However, the integration of third-party models into Rivian’s software represents a distinct approach, leveraging the company’s custom-built in-car applications rather than relying on standard smartphone projection systems like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Rivian’s strategy focuses on creating a seamless experience where the vehicle acts as an extension of the user’s digital life. By connecting the car to the context collected by external AI assistants, the company aims to provide a more personalized and responsive driving environment. The success of this initiative will depend on the company’s ability to manage the technical complexities and maintain the high safety standards required for automotive software.
