TikTok has introduced a new set of tools designed to keep users on its platform from product discovery to final payment. The company announced the launch of an artificial intelligence shopping assistant and an in-app checkout solution called Buy Direct on Monday, October 5. These features mark the beginning of what the company describes as an “agentic commerce” strategy, aiming to reduce friction in the shopping process.
TikTok AI shopping assistant guides purchases
The new conversational AI agent, known as the Shopping Assistant, is integrated into several touchpoints within the TikTok application. According to the company, the tool is designed to understand user context and remember individual needs to help shoppers find suitable products. It provides real-time guidance on product details, shipping options, sizing, and availability within a single conversation.
TikTok stated that the assistant allows users to ask questions directly within the ad environment. This integration is intended to provide immediate answers to potential buyers, reducing the need to leave the app to search for information elsewhere. The company emphasized that keeping these interactions within the platform helps maintain user engagement during high-intent moments.
Buy Direct simplifies the checkout process
Alongside the AI assistant, TikTok rolled out Buy Direct, an in-app checkout solution. This feature enables users to complete transactions with brands without navigating away from the TikTok interface. The company claims the solution simplifies the purchase journey by allowing users to buy items directly from the For You feed with a single click.

Buy Direct is powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). This integration connects TikTok’s platform with external commerce systems, allowing for seamless transaction processing. The goal is to eliminate the friction often associated with redirecting users to third-party websites, which can lead to abandoned carts.
In a product announcement blog post, TikTok explained that these tools are meant to close gaps between interest and purchase. The company noted that shopper interest can fade if they encounter too much friction or have to search for product details independently. By bringing AI-powered assistance closer to the moment of discovery, TikTok aims to capture sales that might otherwise be lost.
Currently, these agentic solutions are available to advertisers through eligibility-based testing opportunities. The company is rolling out the features gradually to ensure stability and effectiveness before a wider release.

Market context and future outlook
The launch comes as TikTok Shop seeks to expand its share of the retail market. The Wall Street Journal reported in April that TikTok Shop could increase its share of overall retail sales from 1% to 10% by 2028. Marshal Cohen, chief retail adviser at market research firm Circana, told the Journal that consumers have adopted TikTok as a key space for brand discovery and association.
This move follows earlier steps by TikTok to integrate AI into its advertising infrastructure. In May, the company launched the TikTok Ads Model Context Protocol (MCP), a system that connects AI agents directly to its ad platform. This allows AI systems to plan, launch, and optimize campaigns without human intervention, further automating the commerce ecosystem.
TikTok’s push into agentic commerce represents a significant shift in how social media platforms handle transactions. By combining AI-driven guidance with streamlined checkout, the company aims to create a more efficient and engaging shopping experience for its users.
