Samsung Electronics has rolled out a significant update to its SmartThings connected living platform, introducing new features designed to improve device responsiveness and user personalization. The update, which adds support for the latest Matter 1.6 standard, aims to streamline how users interact with their smart home ecosystems.
The platform currently serves 470 million registered users globally and supports more than 430 brands certified under the Works with SmartThings (WWST) program. This latest release focuses on reducing latency during network disruptions and providing proactive suggestions based on user behavior.
SmartThings Now and Local Control
A central component of this release is the introduction of SmartThings Now, a feature positioned at the top of the app’s Home tab. This section replaces previous static dashboards with dynamic cards that offer personalized information and immediate actions. The system analyzes the user’s current context to suggest relevant controls, such as turning on lights or air purifiers as the user approaches their home location.

For users with family care profiles, the update includes specific care cards. If an older parent or dependent shows no device activity for an extended period, the system alerts the caregiver with options to check in or make a call. The feature also learns from user actions, prompting them to create automated routines after they manually perform a task multiple times.
Perhaps the most technical improvement is the expansion of local control capabilities. Previously, many commands were routed through Samsung’s cloud servers, which could introduce delays or fail entirely if the internet connection dropped. The new update allows mobile devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network as a SmartThings Hub to communicate directly with the hub.
According to Samsung, this direct communication path improves response times by approximately 30 percent. The system automatically switches between local control when the user is at home and cloud-based remote control when they are away. This ensures that connected devices remain responsive even during temporary network fluctuations or external internet service disruptions.

Matter 1.6 and Interface Changes
The update also integrates Matter 1.6, the latest connectivity standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance. This addition enhances stability and improves group control performance for compatible devices. Samsung has added support for four new device categories under this standard, broadening the range of products that can be managed through the platform.
Visually, the app has been reorganized to reduce clutter. Service cards now use a more space-efficient design, allowing more information to be displayed on a single screen. The update also introduces a Floating Bar at the bottom of the interface, placing frequently used features within easier reach for one-handed use on larger smartphones.

Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of the SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics, stated that the update moves the platform beyond a simple search-and-launch model. By delivering relevant information and controls at the right time, the company aims to empower users to manage their everyday lives more naturally.
The update is available now for existing SmartThings users. Those experiencing issues with customer service are directed to the official support page for assistance.
