Anbernic has officially announced the RG DDS, a new premium handheld gaming device that marks a significant departure from the company’s usual budget-focused lineup. Priced at $299.99, the device is nearly double the cost of the original Nintendo 3DS it emulates, positioning itself as a high-end alternative for retro gaming enthusiasts. A temporary preorder discount brings the price down to $284.99 for early adopters.
Hardware Specifications and Performance
At the core of the RG DDS is the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 processor, a chip capable of handling emulation tasks far beyond just Nintendo 3DS titles. This hardware choice allows the device to run a wide variety of retro games with improved performance compared to previous generations of budget handhelds. Anbernic is offering two configuration options to suit different user needs.
The base model comes equipped with 8GB of memory and 128GB of internal storage. For users requiring more capacity, an upgraded version provides 12GB of memory and 256GB of storage. Both models include a microSD card slot that supports expansion up to 2TB, ensuring ample space for large game libraries. The device also features Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity, along with a 3.5mm audio jack for traditional headphones.
Display output is handled by screens capable of 1080p resolution, which Anbernic suggests may compensate for the absence of the glasses-free 3D graphics found in the original Nintendo 3DS. The device also includes a six-axis gyroscope sensor for motion controls. While the original 3DS was known for its autostereoscopic 3D display, the RG DDS focuses on higher resolution and processing power instead.
Software and Additional Features
The RG DDS will run on Android 16, giving users access to the full Android ecosystem and a wide range of emulator applications. This software choice allows for greater flexibility compared to closed-system handhelds, enabling players to install and manage games from various sources. Anbernic has also included an AI button on the device, which the company says will provide game guides, strategies, and real-time translation during gameplay. The company hinted at additional AI features to be released in future updates.
Shipping for the RG DDS is scheduled to begin gradually on December 10, 2026. The device will be available in three color options: Glacier White, Basalt Black, and Phantom Blue. This launch represents Anbernic’s attempt to capture the premium segment of the handheld market, competing directly with other high-end retro gaming devices.
