The autonomous vehicle industry is experiencing a surge in activity that may eclipse the dealmaking frenzy of 2016. According to Trucks VC, a firm specializing in early-stage investments, the sector has received pitches from 81 new startups so far in 2026. This figure represents a two-thirds increase from the previous year and surpasses the volume seen during the peak boom years of a decade ago.

AI Foundation Models Lower Entry Barriers

Puneeth Meruva, a partner at Trucks VC, attributes this acceleration to the maturation of artificial intelligence. He notes that the industry is shifting from earlier, fragmented architectures to end-to-end systems made possible by foundation models. These models excel at generalizing across diverse environments, which reduces the time and capital required to deploy functional vehicles.

The availability of powerful open-source tools has further democratized access to the technology. Meruva highlighted that startups are now able to launch within months and raise less than $1 million, a significant drop from the capital requirements of previous eras. This lower barrier to entry has attracted a wider variety of founders to the space.

While many assume these new ventures will focus on niche industrial applications like mining or agriculture, a notable portion are targeting the consumer robotaxi market. Several of these companies are positioning themselves as direct competitors to established leaders like Waymo. Meruva suggests that smaller firms can still find success by focusing on specific geographic regions or route types rather than attempting global scale immediately.

    Major Deals Reshape the Landscape

Beyond the startup wave, significant corporate moves are altering the autonomous vehicle ecosystem. Bedrock Robotics, an autonomous technology firm, closed a $600 million Series C round that values the company at $4.1 billion. The round was co-led by CapitalG and Emergence Capital, with participation from Nvidia and Temasek.

In the manufacturing sector, Re:Build, a Massachusetts-based accelerator co-founded by former Amazon executive Jeff Wilke, raised $2.1 billion. The capital will be used to expand production capacity for hard tech products. The investment was led by General Catalyst and JPMorgan Chase’s Strategic Investment Group.

Partnerships are also solidifying between tech and automotive giants. Waymo and Toyota have formalized a manufacturing agreement. Toyota will produce AV-ready bZ4X vehicles at its Japanese factory, integrating Waymo’s self-driving system for use in robotaxi services across Japan, the UK, and other markets. The companies indicated this could eventually lead to licensing deals for personal vehicles.

Other industry developments include Kodiak AI securing its first binding commercial contract to deliver 75 self-driving trucks to DTL Transport starting in 2028. Meanwhile, Rivian adjusted its 2026 delivery guidance upward and expanded its joint venture with Volkswagen Group to include AI assistants. In the broader tech sector, DoorDash agreed to acquire Instacart for $17 billion, while GM settled a $220 million lawsuit regarding the sale of driver data.
