KDE, the open-source software developer behind the popular Linux desktop environment, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. To mark the milestone, the organization released Plasma 6.8, officially dubbed the “30th Anniversary Edition.” The update signals a major architectural shift by retiring native X11 session support, pushing the desktop fully toward the modern Wayland display protocol.

X11 Protocol Retirement in Plasma 6.8

The release marks the end of an era for the X11 protocol, which has served as the standard for graphical user interfaces for 42 years. KDE is the latest major desktop environment to drop native X11 sessions, following GNOME, which officially removed default X11 support in 2025. Plasma 6.8 will now rely entirely on Wayland for new sessions.

Users who need to run legacy X11 applications can still do so through the XWayland compatibility layer. This ensures that older software continues to function without interruption. Additionally, KDE applications will retain X11 support when running under other desktop environments that still utilize the older protocol. Users who have not yet upgraded from Plasma 6.7 will retain their existing session configurations for the time being.

    Remote Desktop and System Improvements

Plasma 6.8 introduces significant upgrades for remote access, targeting homelab enthusiasts and users managing virtual displays across networks. The built-in remote desktop server now features clipboard synchronization, allowing data to move seamlessly between the client and the server. A new “Exclusive Mode” locks the server’s physical display, enabling the remote client to set a virtual display that mirrors the user’s local PC setup.

The update also includes adaptive remote streaming, which adjusts video quality to maintain stability on slower internet connections. Beyond remote access, the release brings several quality-of-life improvements. Nvidia triple buffering is now enabled by default to enhance graphics performance. The Union theming system has been streamlined to make customization easier, and third-party apps can now receive window decorations like shadows and rounded corners more consistently.

System administrators and power users will appreciate the updated System Monitor. The revamped tool allows users to pin specific processes directly to CPU cores through a graphical interface, offering finer control over system resources. A new command-line utility called kscreenctl has also been added to help users adjust display configurations via the terminal. Furthermore, Kup, KDE’s dedicated backup utility, is now fully integrated into the Plasma desktop environment.

    Documentary and Community Milestone

Alongside the software release, KDE debuted a new documentary titled “The KDE Documentary, A Story of Free Software Underdogs.” The film chronicles the history of the project and its contributors. The opening minutes feature an interview montage where KDE developers laugh while struggling to define what KDE actually is, highlighting the project’s complex and evolving identity over three decades.

The release of Plasma 6.8 solidifies KDE’s position in the modern Linux landscape. By fully committing to Wayland and enhancing remote management tools, the organization is preparing its desktop environment for the next phase of development. The 30th anniversary edition serves as both a celebration of past achievements and a foundation for future stability.
