Walmart has issued an important recall for over 12,000 cartons of its Great Value Chicken Broth due to concerns about compromised packaging. The defect may result in spoilage and pose health risks to consumers. Affected products were distributed to stores across nine states, and Walmart urges customers to check their kitchens for this potentially unsafe product.

Details of the Chicken Broth Recall

The recall applies to 48-ounce cartons of Great Value Chicken Broth with a “best by” date of March 25, 2026 and UPC code 007874206684. The packaging defect could compromise sterility, leading to spoilage and increasing the risk of foodborne illnesses.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall was initiated on December 11, 2023, and officially published on January 8, 2024. No illnesses have been reported so far, but Walmart is encouraging customers to discard any affected products immediately.

    States Affected

The recall impacts 242 Walmart stores across the following states:

    • Alabama
    • Arkansas
    • Georgia
    • Louisiana
    • Missouri
    • Mississippi
    • Oklahoma
    • Tennessee
    • Texas

If you purchased Great Value Chicken Broth in any of these states, inspect the product carefully for the recall details.

    What Is Chicken Broth?

Chicken broth is a savory liquid made by simmering chicken, vegetables, and seasonings. It’s a staple ingredient in soups, sauces, and other dishes. According to the USDA, unopened chicken broth can remain shelf-stable for years. However, opened broth should be refrigerated and consumed within three to four days or frozen for up to three months.

    What Should Consumers Do?

Walmart advises consumers who have purchased the recalled chicken broth to:

    1. Inspect packaging: Look for signs of spoilage, such as discoloration, mold, or an unusual odor.
    2. Discard the product: If your broth matches the recall details, do not consume it.
    3. Request a refund: Return the product to the Walmart store where it was purchased for a full refund.

Health Risks of Spoiled Chicken Broth

Consuming spoiled chicken broth can lead to foodborne illnesses, with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. If you or a family member experiences these symptoms after consuming the product, seek medical attention promptly.

    Similar Recent Recalls at Walmart

The chicken broth recall follows other food safety concerns at Walmart. In December 2023, the retailer voluntarily recalled:

    • Braga Fresh broccoli, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
    • Frito-Lay chips, after undeclared milk allergens were discovered.

These incidents highlight the importance of consumer vigilance and prompt action by retailers to ensure food safety.

    Shelf-Stable Products and Packaging Risks

While unopened cartons of chicken broth are designed for long-term storage, compromised packaging can allow bacteria or other contaminants to enter. Walmart’s recall addresses this exact issue, emphasizing the importance of checking product integrity before use.

    Stay Informed About Food Recalls

Walmart chicken broth recall is as a reminder to customers about food safety and awareness. Consumers are encouraged to monitor recall notices from retailers and the FDA to protect themselves and their families from potential health risks.
