United Airlines is expanding its flight network with five new nonstop routes scheduled to begin service in 2027. The additions include three international destinations in Canada and two domestic routes within the United States. This expansion follows a renewed agreement between United and Air Canada to deepen their transborder partnership.
Canadian Destinations Return to United Network
Three of the new routes connect major United hubs to Canadian cities. Denver International Airport will begin serving Ottawa and Quebec City. The Denver to Ottawa leg restores a connection that United previously operated until 2010. The Denver to Quebec City service is a brand-new itinerary for the carrier.
The third Canadian route connects Newark Liberty International Airport to St. John’s in Newfoundland and Labrador. This seasonal service marks United’s return to the region for the first time since 2016. These international legs are part of the expanded Transborder Joint Business Agreement between United and Air Canada. The partnership allows the two Star Alliance carriers to coordinate schedules and pool revenue on flights between the two countries.

Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Air Canada, stated in a press release that the partnership continues to deliver results for customers. He noted that the airlines have worked for nearly three decades to strengthen connectivity between the United States and Canada.
Domestic Routes Address Airport Constraints
The remaining two new routes are domestic adjustments designed to maintain capacity while managing infrastructure bottlenecks. United will launch seasonal service between Washington Dulles International Airport and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Additionally, a route will connect Denver to Joplin, Missouri.

These short-to-medium haul domestic flights are expected to start in March 2027. They serve as workarounds for ongoing construction and operational restrictions at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. United plans to operate these domestic itineraries using Bombardier CRJ-200 jets. The aircraft type for the new Canadian destinations has not yet been announced.
Complementary Expansion by Air Canada
Air Canada is introducing three new US-bound routes for the 2027 season to complement United’s expansion. The carrier will launch a new connection between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in April 2027. Air Canada will also introduce daily seasonal service between Montreal-Trudeau International Airport and Indianapolis International Airport from June through September 2027.
Furthermore, Air Canada is launching a transborder route between Edmonton International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. The airline is also increasing capacity on its existing Edmonton to San Francisco route by replacing smaller regional aircraft with Airbus A220 jets. Bloomberg reported that the two airlines are working on adding up to 10 more US-Canada itineraries. Potential new routes could include connections between Montreal and Chicago, Montreal and Washington, Ottawa and New York, Toronto and San Francisco, and Vancouver and San Francisco.

The expanded joint venture currently supports more than 1,200 connecting itineraries across North America. The full expansion is expected to add thousands more options once approved.
