Singapore Airlines has secured the top position in Skytrax’s 2026 World Airline Awards for the World’s Best Economy Class category. The carrier was followed by Cathay Pacific Airways and Qatar Airways, completing the podium in a ranking that highlights the intense competition among global carriers to improve standard economy products.
The results show a tight margin between the top three airlines. In the previous year’s awards, Singapore Airlines placed third, while Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways held the first and second spots respectively. This shift indicates that the quality of service and hardware across these leading carriers is exceptionally close.
Singapore Airlines Sets the Standard
Skytrax voters identified Singapore Airlines as the provider of the world’s best economy class product. The airline markets its standard seats as designed to provide personal space even when the seat in front is reclined. The carrier offers a standard economy class legroom of 32 inches, which is longer than the industry average but slightly less than the 34 inches found on Japan Airlines, ANA, Emirates, and some Korean Air flights.

Comfort features include a six-way adjustable headrest. Passengers seeking additional space can pay extra for Forward Zone Seats, which allow for earlier disembarkation, or purchase extra legroom. The in-flight experience is supported by the KrisWorld entertainment system and a digital menu available up to six weeks before departure. Frequent flyers can use the SingaporeAir mobile app to save playlists and preferences via a KrisFlyer account.
Singapore Airlines also won the overall World’s Best Airline award. Goh Choon Phong, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Airlines, stated, “We are grateful to our customers for their trust and support, and we are committed to delivering an exceptional, world-class travel experience every time they fly with us.” He added that the award reflects the dedication of the airline’s staff in upholding standards for service and operational excellence.
Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways Follow
Cathay Pacific Airways took second place, a result attributed to significant recent investments. The Cathay Group has spent HK$100 billion, approximately $12.8 billion, to upgrade operations. This funding has been directed toward new aircraft, updated cabins, and improved digital tools, with a major focus on retrofitting older planes to ensure a consistent product across the fleet.
Cathay Pacific’s economy class features a standard seat pitch of 32 inches and a width of 18 inches on its modern Airbus A350 jets. The seats include cushions and six-way adjustable neck support, reducing the need for travel pillows. Passengers also have access to tablet holders and tables for work or entertainment. Reviews suggest the investment is paying off, with observers noting improved service and comfort on the A350-1000 aircraft.

Qatar Airways rounded out the top three with a product that combines spaciousness with extensive entertainment options. The airline offers a seat pitch of 32 inches and a width of 18.5 inches on some flights, though this can drop to 17.5 inches on certain aircraft. The carrier has adopted a complex baggage allowance system similar to low-cost airlines, with restrictions varying by route.
For long-haul flights, such as the route from Doha to Auckland, Qatar Airways relies on its Oryx One entertainment system. The system offers up to 8,000 options, including films, TV shows, games, and children’s content. This extensive library is considered a key component of the airline’s economy class appeal.
Other Notable Performers
East Asian carriers continue to dominate the upper tiers of economy class rankings. EVA Air, known for its premium offerings, also received praise for its economy product despite inconsistencies in seat types across its fleet. The airline uses Safran 5751 seats on its A330s, Collins Pinnacle seats on its 777s, and Recaro CL3710 seats on its Dreamliners. All configurations offer 31 inches of pitch and three inches of recline. The Boeing 777-300ER is highlighted as the best option, featuring a nine-abreast configuration that feels more spacious than the standard ten-abreast layout.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) placed fifth in the 2026 awards, dropping one spot from the previous year. While its domestic narrowbody economy class is standard for short-haul travel, its international widebody aircraft offer a pitch of 34 inches. ANA’s A380s and reconfigured 777s feature 13.3-inch entertainment screens. The airline also offers Couchii seats, which allow passengers to purchase a section of three or four seats with a leg rest that extends to create a bed area. This feature, originally introduced by Air New Zealand, is available in rows 71 to 76 on select aircraft.
Skytrax conducts its survey from September to August each year, with millions of passengers from at least 100 countries voting. The awards are funded by Skytrax’s other business ventures and receive no sponsorship to ensure impartiality. The winners were announced at London’s Langham Hotel on September 18, 2026.
