French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to hold rioters accountable following a weekend of widespread violence that left nearly 1,000 police officers and gendarmes injured. Speaking to the nation on Sunday, the president expressed deep frustration over the destruction but stopped short of declaring a state of emergency or imposing a curfew.

Macron described the events of Saturday as an attempt by violent groups to “bring down the republic.” He stated that those who engaged in looting and property damage would “pay for their crimes.” The Interior Ministry reported that authorities arrested approximately 2,400 individuals during the unrest, marking one of the most severe periods of urban violence in recent French history.

Macron Addresses France Riots and Unrest

In his televised address, Macron sought to draw a line between citizens with legitimate grievances and those using the opportunity to commit crimes. He emphasized that the government distinguishes between peaceful protesters and individuals who smashed windows and looted stores. To support communities affected by the violence, he announced the creation of a “crisis unit” designed to deliver urgent aid to those facing difficult circumstances.

The president acknowledged that law enforcement officers faced “unprecedented violence” despite their professionalism. He instructed the government to conduct a thorough review of the events to prevent similar outbreaks in the future. Macron called for national unity, calm, and respect for public order as the country moves forward.

Al Jazeera reporter Natacha Butler, reporting from Paris, noted that Macron’s speech offered few new details. She suggested that the address might not satisfy all protesters, as many have expressed fatigue with presidential rhetoric regarding the ongoing crisis.

    Political Fallout Ahead of Elections

The unrest has intensified political tensions as parties prepare for the presidential elections scheduled for next year. The violence has become a focal point for candidates seeking to differentiate their platforms on public safety and governance.

Left-wing presidential candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon placed full responsibility for the destruction on the current government. He argued that officials failed to maintain public order and did not adequately organize security measures. Melenchon’s comments highlight the growing criticism from the political left regarding the state’s handling of social unrest.

Meanwhile, far-right presidential hopeful Jordan Bardella criticized Macron’s response as “lamentable” and “cowardly.” Bardella asserted that the government has run out of options to protect French citizens and cannot even ensure basic security. His remarks reflect the far-right’s strategy to portray the administration as weak on law and order.

As the political debate intensifies, the government remains focused on restoring order without invoking emergency powers. The crisis unit Macron announced will begin coordinating aid efforts immediately, while authorities continue to process the thousands of arrests made over the weekend.
