Disney and The Pokémon Company have officially announced a new streaming series, Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu, which is scheduled to debut in 2027. The stop-motion animated adventure series will premiere on Disney XD and stream exclusively on Disney Plus.
The project marks a significant collaboration between The Pokémon Company and Aardman Animations, the British studio renowned for creating Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, and Shaun the Sheep. This partnership was first revealed in 2024, with the new announcement confirming the specific title and release window for the upcoming show.
Stop-Motion Adventures in the Galar Region
The series will follow the characters Sirfetch’d and Pichu as they navigate the Galar region, the setting for the video games Pokémon Sword and Shield. According to the official synopsis, the two Pokémon embark on a quest to help and protect other Pokémon across the region. Their missions are described as rarely going as planned, but their efforts ultimately strengthen their friendship as they face peril, rivalries, and new allies.
Sean Clarke, managing director of Aardman, commented on the partnership when it was initially announced. He stated that combining Pokémon with Aardman’s focus on character and comedic storytelling felt incredibly exciting. Clarke noted that both organizations share an emphasis on heritage, attention to detail, and putting audiences at the center of their creative process.
Phil Rynda, director of original animation at The Pokémon Company, added that the stories are told from the perspective of the Pokémon themselves. He highlighted the work of the filmmakers at Aardman, suggesting that their approach makes the Galar region feel tangible and immersive for viewers.
Expanding Pokémon’s Presence on Disney Platforms
This new series is part of a broader strategy to expand Pokémon’s availability on Disney platforms. In addition to the upcoming Aardman production, Pokémon the Series: The Beginning, the classic anime series, is now streaming on Disney Plus in the United States and select international markets.
Later seasons of the anime, including Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon and its subsequent arcs, remain available on Hulu in the U.S. Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, described Pokémon as a brand that maintains relevance for young audiences while resonating with longtime fans. She noted that the new series offers a fresh perspective on beloved characters through Aardman’s distinctive animation style.
The confirmation of the 2027 release date provides a concrete timeline for fans awaiting new content from the franchise. The series will join the existing catalog of Pokémon content on Disney Plus, offering viewers a different visual style compared to the traditional 2D animation of the main anime series.
