Pokémon fans have spent decades playing as the heroic trainers who save the world. A new fan project flips that script entirely. Team Rocket Evolved is a ROM hack for Pokémon Emerald that allows players to take on the role of the villainous Team Rocket organization.
The project transforms the standard monster-catching experience into a campaign of theft and conquest. Players start as low-level grunts and work their way up to become Team Rocket admins. The core gameplay loop involves stealing other trainers’ Pokémon. If a player successfully pilfers a Pokémon, the opponent may concede the battle immediately.
Hostile Territory and Scarcity
Playing as the antagonists changes how the world reacts to the player. In Team Rocket Evolved, the locals of Hoenn are hostile. Standard services like Pokémon Centers are locked until the player takes control of an area and defeats the local gym leader. This forces players to find alternate ways to heal their teams, which are described as pricey and scarce resources.
The game also introduces mechanics that reflect the organization’s underhanded tactics. Players can call for backup from the larger Team Rocket network during battles. This adds a layer of strategy that differs significantly from the fair play of the original games.
Hand-Crafted Development
The project is being developed by a duo known as EricTurner3 and his wife. They have explicitly stated that they are not using artificial intelligence to build the ROM hack. The creators are hand-crafting every element of the game to ensure a high-quality experience.
The finished product aims to include Pokémon from every generation. This includes features like Mega Evolutions and Dynamax Evolutions. The developers are also adding new types of trainers to encounter, providing a fresh challenge for players familiar with the original Emerald version.
Despite the villainous theme, the game retains some familiar comforts. Pokémon can still follow the player around, similar to the mechanic in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. This creates an interesting contrast between the friendly companion behavior and the aggressive gameplay of stealing other trainers’ teams.
The project is still in development. The creators are encouraging fans to send ideas or requests via the official subreddit. This community feedback loop helps shape the final product as the duo continues to refine the hack.
