Lufthansa Launches First Nonstop Europe Flight from Columbus

Columbus, Ohio, is set to receive its first direct transatlantic connection when Lufthansa begins nonstop service to Frankfurt, Germany, in May 2027. The airline announced on Monday that the new route will launch on May 5, 2027, marking a significant expansion of international connectivity for the state capital.

Lufthansa Columbus Flight Schedule and Aircraft

The new service will operate three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Bookings for the route are scheduled to open on Oct. 20, 2026, allowing travelers to plan their itineraries well in advance. The flights will utilize a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, a wide-body aircraft designed for long-haul efficiency.

Inside the aircraft, passengers will find 28 Allegris business class suites, 28 premium economy seats, and 197 economy class seats. This configuration provides a mix of comfort options for both business and leisure travelers heading to Europe. The airline has structured the cabin layout to maximize space and convenience for the nearly seven-hour journey across the Atlantic.

Dirk Janzen, vice president of passenger sales for the Americas at the Lufthansa Group, emphasized the strategic importance of the route. “The new service will provide both business and leisure travelers with a convenient nonstop connection to Germany, as well as onward destinations across our Lufthansa Group network,” Janzen said in a statement. He noted that the launch represents an important step in the carrier’s continued expansion in the United States, which remains its most important market outside of its home region.

Frankfurt Hub Access and Regional Context

The primary benefit for Columbus residents is direct access to Frankfurt Airport (FRA), one of the busiest aviation hubs in Europe. From Frankfurt, passengers can connect to hundreds of destinations across the continent and beyond. This eliminates the need for time-consuming layovers in other major U.S. cities like New York or Chicago for many travelers in the Midwest.

The route joins a growing trend of central U.S. airports gaining direct European service. Other cities such as Austin, Nashville, and St. Louis have recently announced similar transatlantic connections with carriers including Delta Air Lines, Air France, and Icelandair. Major airlines like American Airlines and United Airlines are also expanding their European offerings from hubs in Newark, Philadelphia, and Washington Dulles.

Unlike its Ohio neighbors Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Columbus has never offered nonstop service to Europe. This gap persisted even when the airport served as a hub for America West Airlines, which never operated transatlantic flights before merging with US Airways in 2005. Cincinnati was previously a Delta hub, and Cleveland served as a Continental Airlines hub, both of which facilitated European travel.

The Columbus route benefits from revenue guarantees provided by JobsOhio, a state economic development agency. These financial supports help mitigate the risk associated with launching new international routes in markets that have not previously supported them. The service will also integrate with existing loyalty programs, allowing members of Lufthansa’s Miles & More and United’s MileagePlus to earn and redeem miles on the new flights.
