Live tourism has become a significant force in the travel industry, with one in five travelers stating they plan trips around live events and experiences. When destinations and travel companies consider the benefits of hosting high-profile events, they often focus on increased footfall. However, when events occur during high season and tourism is already at peak levels, destinations must evaluate success from different angles.
Boston Hosts FIFA World Cup and America 250
In the summer of 2026, Boston hosted seven FIFA World Cup matches. The city quickly followed with celebrations for America 250 and the Tall Ships, all of which fell within the city’s busiest months of June and July. Lindsay Milne Grant of Meet Boston spoke at the Skift Transatlantic Summit in Dublin on October 15, 2026, about the outcomes of these concurrent events.

According to Milne Grant, the city did not see a boost in hotel occupancy. She stated, “In terms of occupancy, we really didn’t have an opportunity to boost numbers.” The gain came in spending and earned media rather than new visitor volume. Boston also turned social media coverage of Scottish fans into a partnership with VisitScotland, including a Glasgow sister-city relationship and a Tartan Week in Boston next spring.

Iceland Faces Eclipse and Resident Concerns
Iceland did not have ticketed events drawing visitors, but it sat in the path of the total solar eclipse in mid-August. This was a similarly sold-out time for the country, with accommodation booked out far in advance. Arnar Már Ólafsson, Director General of the Icelandic Tourist Board, noted that there was no major economic surge from the event.
Both destinations named the costs of these events. Boston saw softer attraction numbers as regular visitors stayed away expecting crowds. Ólafsson said the real threat in Iceland is losing residents’ confidence, which takes a long time to rebuild. When asked to choose between more visitors or better-timed visitors in 2027, both Boston and Iceland officials picked timing.
