Beginning in August 2027, Lufthansa will introduce nonstop service between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Munich International Airport. This new route marks the first time the German carrier has offered direct flights to Arizona, expanding its presence in the United States market.
Lufthansa Phoenix Munich Flight Details
The airline will operate three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The inaugural flight is scheduled for August 3, 2027. Lufthansa plans to use an Airbus A350-900 for this route, which will carry 293 passengers in total. The cabin configuration includes 48 business class suites, 21 premium economy seats, and 224 economy seats. The aircraft will not feature the airline’s newer Allegris interior design.
This announcement follows another recent expansion by the carrier. Earlier this week, Lufthansa revealed plans for the first-ever nonstop service from Columbus, Ohio, to Europe. These moves are part of a broader strategy among major European carriers to increase service to secondary U.S. cities.
European Carrier Expansion in the U.S.
Lufthansa and its affiliated airlines have been actively targeting markets beyond traditional hubs. Cities such as Minneapolis, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Raleigh-Durham, St. Louis, and San Diego have all seen new transatlantic flights in recent years. This expansion is supported by close partnerships with U.S. carriers. Lufthansa works closely with United Airlines, while Air France and KLM partner with Delta Air Lines, and British Airways and Iberia link with American Airlines.
These immunized partnerships allow European airlines to operate more easily across the Atlantic. The trend reflects a shift in the aviation industry, where carriers seek to capture demand in growing regional markets rather than focusing solely on major metropolitan areas.
U.S. carriers are also responding to this trend. American, Delta, and United have all announced their own multi-route expansions to Europe for 2027. This competitive landscape suggests a busy period for transatlantic travel as airlines adjust their networks to meet changing passenger preferences.
Discover Airlines Takes Over Seattle Routes
In addition to the new Phoenix and Columbus routes, Lufthansa is restructuring its existing service from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The airline will shift its Seattle-Munich and Seattle-Frankfurt flights to its leisure subsidiary, Discover Airlines. These routes will be operated by a Discover Airbus A330.
Discover Airlines is not a member of the Star Alliance. This means that loyalty benefits are not guaranteed for passengers, including members of United MileagePlus, which is a close partner of Lufthansa. Travelers using these routes should check their specific loyalty program terms before booking.
The addition of Phoenix to its network brings Lufthansa’s total U.S. destinations to 26 when combined with other European airlines under its ownership umbrella. This expansion highlights the carrier’s commitment to growing its footprint in the American market, even as it adjusts its existing routes to better align with its leisure and business travel strategies.
