Apple has officially confirmed that its new MacBook Pro models featuring touchscreen capabilities will be available to the public starting Friday, November 6. The new lineup includes the MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max, marking a significant shift for the company’s professional laptop line by integrating touch input and the Dynamic Island interface.
ProLED XDR Display and Hardware Specifications
The new MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max models feature a tandem OLED display that Apple calls ProLED XDR. The panels scale up to 2,000 nits of brightness and support a 120Hz refresh rate through ProMotion technology. The display adjusts its refresh rate based on activity, scaling down to 10Hz while idle to conserve power and ramping up to 120Hz during graphics-intensive tasks.
Apple states that the displays control color and pixel luminance at the sub-millisecond level. The panels offer a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and cover both the P3 and Adobe RGB color gamuts. To reduce glare, the company etched nano-texture directly into the glass. The touch sensor is built directly into the panel rather than layered on top of it.
The chassis has been redesigned to be thinner and lighter. The 14-inch model weighs three pounds, while the 16-inch model weighs four pounds. The illuminated Apple logo on the back of the lid has been restored. The laptops support up to 128GB of unified memory.
Dynamic Island and Software Integration
For the first time, the MacBook Pro features the Dynamic Island, a feature originally introduced on the iPhone. This cutout replaces the traditional notch and serves as a dynamic multitasking hub. It acts as the new home for Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri, placing these features front and center for quick reference.
Apple designed the Dynamic Island to adapt through unique touch-based interactions. The goal is to keep dynamic, time-sensitive events and apps in close view. The company says existing apps should register touches as clicks, allowing for immediate usability without requiring major software updates.
This approach brings usability wins from the iPhone to the MacBook. Apple is not bringing iPhone apps directly to macOS. Instead, it is folding touch functionality into the premium display experience of the MacBook Pro.
Pricing and Availability
The new MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max are now available for preorder. General availability begins on November 6. The base model with the lowest configuration starts at $2,899. This includes the 14-inch M5 Pro with 24GB of unified memory and 1TB of local storage.
Prices increase significantly for higher configurations. The 16-inch model with 16TB of storage starts at $14,000. These devices target creators, artists, and power users who require high-end hardware. They sit above the recently announced M6 MacBook Pro, which is positioned as a more accessible workhorse option.
The launch follows other recent product announcements from Apple under CEO John Ternus. The company also released the iPhone Duo foldable phone earlier this month. It has also introduced a new lineup of smart home products aimed at the Amazon market.
Touchscreen laptops have been common on Windows and Chromebook devices for years. Apple previously resisted this technology, with Steve Jobs calling them ergonomically terrible. The new MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max models represent a departure from that stance, leveraging the company’s experience with the iPhone to create a distinct touch experience on macOS.
