Intel has remained relatively quiet about its consumer CPU roadmap following the release of Panther Lake earlier this year and Wildcat Lake in April. New information from a known leaker identified as Jaykihn now sheds light on the next step in the company’s low-power strategy: Moon Lake. The leaked base specifications suggest a chip designed specifically for the ultra-budget segment, likely serving as the direct successor to the existing Intel N-series system-on-chips (SoCs).

Moon Lake Architecture and Core Layout

The most distinct feature of the upcoming Moon Lake silicon is its core configuration. According to the leaked data, the chip will contain four low-power efficiency (LP-E) cores and zero performance cores. This all-efficiency layout mirrors the structure found in Wildcat Lake, where the efficiency cores are grouped in their own island. Industry observers expect these cores to be built on Darkmont LP-E silicon, which is designed to maximize energy savings rather than raw processing speed.

The thermal design power (TDP) for Moon Lake is expected to range from 6 watts to 15 watts. The base configuration appears to center around 6 watts, a figure that aligns closely with the power envelopes of smartphone and tablet processors. This low power consumption is a critical factor for the devices this chip is intended to power, as it allows for thinner designs and longer battery life without the need for large cooling solutions.

    Target Market and Performance Expectations

Moon Lake is positioned to replace the Intel N-series chips that currently populate a significant number of ultra-budget laptops and mini-PCs. These devices typically retail between $300 and $500, a price point that is highly sensitive to component costs. By offering a more power-efficient alternative, Intel hopes to maintain its foothold in this competitive market segment. The chip is not expected to arrive until 2028, giving the company time to refine its manufacturing processes and manage supply chain constraints for NAND and DDR memory.

While specific clock speeds have not been disclosed, the architectural improvements suggest a shift in performance characteristics. The previous N150 processor operated with a 3.6 GHz turbo frequency. Although Moon Lake retains the same four-core count and 6W TDP as its predecessors, the new Darkmont architecture is expected to deliver higher instructions per clock (IPC). This means that while peak speeds may not skyrocket, everyday tasks should feel more responsive. The primary advantage for consumers will likely be significantly improved battery life in laptops and mini-PCs, rather than a dramatic increase in processing power.

As the tech industry continues to demand more power for AI-related tasks, the balance between performance and efficiency remains a tightrope walk for budget chipmakers. Moon Lake represents Intel’s attempt to solve this equation for the entry-level market, prioritizing endurance and cost over high-end computing capabilities.
