Google is preparing a significant update for its Pixel phones that connects two previously separate features. Internal code found in a recent beta version of the Google Phone app reveals work to integrate Take a Message directly into Transit Mode. This change would allow users to automatically handle calls while on public transportation without manually enabling the feature.
Transit Mode and Take a Message Integration
Transit Mode launched earlier this year as a dedicated setting for Pixel users. It configures the device for crowded public transit environments by limiting sounds and restricting notifications to protect privacy. The mode allows users to whitelist specific contacts whose calls will still come through.
Recent code analysis from Android Authority points to a new component labeled BeeslyTransitModeService. Beesly is the internal Google codename for Take a Message, a feature that answers incoming calls and records a message for the user. The code includes strings such as Transit mode enabled, attempting to start Beesly, indicating a direct link between the two systems.

This integration offers a practical solution for commuters who do not want Take a Message active at all times. Currently, users must manually toggle the feature on or off. With the new update, the system would automatically engage Take a Message when Transit Mode is activated. This ensures calls are handled discreetly during the commute and then returns to normal operation once the user leaves the transit environment.
The code also prepares the feature for international rollout. Take a Message currently operates differently depending on the region. In some countries, the feature provides full transcripts of the conversation. In others, it only saves the audio recording. The new code structure supports both methods, ensuring the feature works correctly across all supported nations.

Phone App Interface Simplification
Alongside the Transit Mode changes, the Google Phone app is undergoing a minor interface adjustment. The current process for changing the incoming call gesture requires users to navigate to a specific settings screen, tap their existing selection, and then choose a new option. This involves multiple taps to make a simple change.
Internal strings suggest Google is considering a simplification. The new design would place the toggle directly on the main settings screen. This change would save users an extra tap when adjusting their call handling preferences. While this is a small update, it streamlines the user experience for a frequently used setting.
These changes are currently visible only in the code of a public beta release. Google has not officially announced the feature or provided a release date. The final implementation may differ from what is currently in the code. Users might see additional options, such as custom greetings specific to Transit Mode, in the final product.

The integration of Take a Message into Transit Mode represents a more cohesive approach to managing device behavior in specific contexts. It reduces the friction for users who rely on public transit and want to avoid calls without completely silencing their device. The update is expected to roll out to Pixel devices in a future software release.
