The United States military has established a new operational unit designed to intercept the movement of weapons and materials across Iran’s borders. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday that Task Force Iron Gate would coordinate with other US government agencies to prevent the transport of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, and sanctioned materials across Iran’s land borders and the Caspian Sea.

This development marks a significant expansion of the US military presence in the region. The new task force reinforces the months-long naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated that the initiative aims to reinforce the success of the existing maritime restrictions.

    Task Force Iron Gate Operations

Based in Tampa, Florida, the new unit will focus on identifying the origins of incoming weapons systems and determining how to cut off their transport. Michael Mulroy, a former US deputy assistant defence secretary for the Middle East, explained that the task force will also monitor how Iran transports its energy resources.

Mulroy noted that if US President Donald Trump orders an escalation of the conflict, the military would likely target this series of infrastructure points. He distinguished this approach from previous operations, suggesting that these targets would focus on economic and infrastructure assets rather than purely military ones. The goal is to cut the regime off from its ability to fund itself and fight.

    Escalating Naval Blockade

The announcement of the land-based task force coincides with intensified naval enforcement actions. CENTCOM reported that it had disabled a commercial cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman as part of the blockade. A US military aircraft fired precision munitions at the stern of the St. Kitts-flagged M/V Huda after CENTCOM forces directed the crew to abandon targeted spaces.

According to CENTCOM, enforcement actions since July have resulted in US forces redirecting 147 commercial vessels that complied with orders. Five merchant ships that refused to comply were disabled. These actions have contributed to rising tensions in the region, with reports of explosions heard on Qeshm Island and in the cities of Jask, Sirik, and Bandar Abbas.

Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported the sounds of two explosions on Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz. The agency also reported several explosions in nearby coastal cities. President Trump confirmed new strikes on Qeshm Island a day earlier but downplayed them as minor. He added that Tehran still wants a deal as Qatari-mediated talks continue.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy reported that two oil tankers struck mines near the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. Iranian state television, citing the navy, said the tankers had passed through an unsafe part of the strait with their navigation systems off. The vessels suffered severe damage and stopped after hitting sea mines.
