For 68 years, Charlie Brown’s correspondence with an anonymous pen pal remained one of the most enduring mysteries in Charles Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip. The character, who first appeared in a strip published on August 25, 1958, was never visually depicted in the original run. That changes with the upcoming animated special Snoopy Unleashed, which will mark the first official on-screen appearance of one of Charlie Brown’s correspondents.
The 1958 Pencil Pal Mystery
The tradition of pen pals was common in mid-20th century America, but Schulz adapted the concept for his protagonist. Because Charlie Brown’s pencils famously exploded upon use, he relied on a pencil pal rather than a traditional pen pal. The character wrote to Charlie Brown from outside the United States, establishing a long-distance friendship that defined much of the strip’s later years.
Schulz introduced the character as a girl from Scotland named Morag. She was known for writing her Scottish accent phonetically in her letters. Charlie Brown developed a deep affection for her, only to be heartbroken when he learned she maintained a list of 30 other pen pals. The storyline continued sporadically until August 1998, when Schulz abruptly ended the arc. Morag was never shown on-panel, leaving her identity and appearance to the imagination of readers for decades.
From Unproduced Special to Graphic Novel
Schulz had originally planned to continue the storyline in an animated special titled Will Ye No Come Back Again, Charlie Brown? The project was never produced during his lifetime. However, the unused script was later adapted into an original graphic novel, Scotland Bound, Charlie Brown, published by Boom! Studios in 2021. In that story, Charlie Brown travels to Scotland to meet Morag, only to discover she is in Mexico. He ends up befriending a local girl named Nell, who becomes his new pen pal.

The Peanuts franchise has continued to expand under Apple TV, which has released new animated specials annually since 2021. These productions, created by Peanuts Worldwide, Schulz Studio, and WildBrain Studios, have occasionally revisited older storylines. The upcoming special Snoopy Unleashed, scheduled for release in 2027, will finally resolve the pencil pal mystery with a new character.
Mia’s Official Debut in Snoopy Unleashed
In Snoopy Unleashed, Charlie Brown receives a surprise visit from a new pencil pal named Mia. The character is portrayed as a wheelchair-using Londoner of South Asian descent, voiced by Lara Mehmet. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that sends Snoopy running away to London, forcing Charlie Brown and the rest of the gang to chase after him.
This development marks a significant shift in how the franchise handles legacy characters. While Morag remained an unseen voice in letters for 68 years, Mia will be visually represented for the first time in the Peanuts universe. The move aligns with recent efforts to diversify the cast, such as Franklin’s expanded role in the 2024 special Welcome Home, Franklin. The special continues the tradition of exploring Charlie Brown’s social life through correspondence, but with a modern update that brings the correspondent into the physical world.
