Artificial intelligence is often discussed as an abstract, cloud-based phenomenon. A new documentary titled The Technological Sublime brings the conversation back to the ground. Directed by Jannes Callens, the film examines the tangible physical supply chain that powers AI systems. It will be featured at the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF) in Taipei.

Tracing the AI Supply Chain Across Continents

The film follows the raw materials and labor required to keep AI running. The journey begins in the Appalachian mountains, where quartz is mined for essential components. From there, the narrative moves to semiconductor plants in Taiwan and lithium fields in Chile. The documentary also highlights undersea cables that transmit data globally and the human workers in Kenya who label images for training algorithms.

Callens stated that his goal was to show the material, ecological, and human costs behind the technology. He noted that online searches for AI typically return images of humanoid robots. This absence of imagery regarding the underlying infrastructure motivated him to create the film. He aims to provide nuance to the AI debate by showing the essence of technological miracles without ignoring their physical footprint.

    Production and Festival Debut

The Technological Sublime is a co-production between Brussels-based Visualantics and Cobra Films, Paris-based Tag Film, and Taipei-based Reel Asia Pictures. Delegate producer Steven Dhoedt has a history of covering emerging technologies. His previous work included Inside the Metaverse, which examined virtual worlds in 2010. Dhoedt believes the film offers a grounded approach to a subject often shrouded in hype.

Callens previously directed Dor, a documentary about a young man returning to Romania to become a shepherd. That film won Best Belgian Film at the Brussels Independent Film Festival. The first scenes of The Technological Sublime have already been shot. The production team is currently securing the remaining financing for the project.

The Taiwan Creative Content Fest, organized by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), runs from November 6 to 9 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center. Producer Steven Dhoedt said the festival provides a chance to introduce the film to Asian audiences. The team is also working with Reel Asia Pictures to connect with distributors and sales agents.

Belgian broadcaster VRT has joined the project. Talks are ongoing with other European broadcasters to secure further support. The film seeks to balance artistic expression with a factual look at the resources required for modern computing.
