Air Canada has announced it will not resume its service from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Mumbai Airport (BOM) next year. The airline is restructuring its operations in India, a move that removes Mumbai from its long-haul network. According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, the route was last served in March 2026 using a mix of Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft.
Air India Takes Over the Route
While Air Canada exits the market, Air India will step in to serve the connection. The Indian flag carrier will operate the flights with a stopover at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) on the journey from India to Canada. This marks a shift from Air Canada’s previous model, which operated as a one-stop service via London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

The original schedule for Air Canada’s service was complex. Flights departed Toronto in the evening for an overnight trip to London. Passengers would then depart from the UK at midday to arrive in Mumbai the following morning. Return flights left Mumbai at 4:00 AM, arriving in London in the mid-morning, before continuing to Toronto in the afternoon. The new Air India service will differ significantly. The route was initially scheduled to operate nonstop flights both ways but will now include one stop on the westbound journey. Return flights are expected to operate nonstop.
Impact on Air Canada’s Indian Network
The cancellation reduces Air Canada’s Indian destinations to just one: Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). The airline continues to operate nonstop flights to Delhi from Toronto year-round. Seasonal flights are also added from Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL). Air Canada maintains its presence in India due to strong family, cultural, and trade ties. There is a large Indian diaspora in Canada, with an estimated 800,000 people of Indian heritage residing in the Greater Toronto area. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to visit Toronto in December.

Trade ties fuel a significant portion of the demand for this route. Ongoing restrictions on Russian airspace access have forced airlines to reroute services, such as through London Heathrow for the Mumbai link. Air Canada has a long history of serving India, having operated on and off for many decades. Its latest modern nonstop service began in 2015 with flights from Toronto to Delhi.

Future Middle East Plans
Alongside the changes to its Indian network, Air Canada is planning to resume service to Tel Aviv (TLV) and Dubai International Airport (DXB) this coming March. These plans are subject to the ongoing geopolitical tension in the Middle East. The airline is adjusting its schedule to reflect current operational realities while maintaining connections to key global hubs.
