Scottish swimmer Archie Goodburn is scheduled to meet the prime minister at Downing Street to advocate for urgent reforms in brain cancer research and patient care. The 25-year-old athlete, who was diagnosed with three inoperable brain tumours in 2024, described the upcoming meeting as a unique opportunity to drive systemic change.

Goodburn’s path to the government’s attention began with an emotional appearance on BBC Breakfast, where he made a tearful plea for greater investment in the field. Speaking directly to the camera, the Edinburgh-born swimmer said he was on his knees begging for help to ease the suffering of patients and their families. He highlighted the disparity between the UK and other nations, noting that life-changing clinical trials are available in the US, Australia, and China but are not accessible to British patients.

Goodburn calls for national brain cancer lead

During his broadcast appearance, Goodburn called for the establishment of a national brain cancer lead to coordinate efforts and give patients a fighting chance. His advocacy resonated with Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, who contacted Goodburn on social media to arrange the Downing Street meeting. Goodburn stated that the government must stop being risk-averse and accept that the current status quo is unacceptable as people continue to die.

The swimmer’s diagnosis came after he experienced numbness and seizures while training for the 2024 Olympic trials. Medical tests revealed three large oligodendrogliomas, a rare cancer affecting the brain and spinal cord. Although he underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, surgeons determined that removing the tumours was impossible. Despite these health challenges, Goodburn went on to reach the final of the 50m breaststroke at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Charities fund most brain tumour research

Goodburn’s campaign highlights a significant funding gap in the sector. According to the charity Brain Tumour Research, charitable organizations provide more than 75% of the total national investment in brain tumour research, leaving the government to fund just 25%. The disease remains the most likely cancer to kill patients under the age of 40 in the UK.

While the Rare Cancers Bill, led by Edinburgh South West MP Scott Arthur, became law earlier this year to incentivize research into rare conditions, Goodburn argues this is not enough. He insists that a dedicated lead for brain cancer is necessary to focus specifically on research and trials for this particular disease. Arthur, who has met with Goodburn multiple times, described the swimmer as a fantastic advocate and expressed hope that the prime minister meeting would lead to concrete progress in dismantling barriers to research.

Goodburn hopes his advocacy will not only open doors at the highest levels of government but also inspire individuals on a personal level. He emphasized that his fight is for himself, his friends, and the wider community affected by brain tumours. The meeting with the prime minister represents a critical step in his campaign to ensure that the injustices faced by the brain tumour community are addressed through increased funding and improved access to global medical advancements.
