The 34th edition of Camerimage Film Festival opened on Saturday with a direct confrontation of artificial intelligence in cinema, alongside honors for industry veterans and a somber tribute to victims of a recent tragedy in Kraków.

The festival, widely recognized as the world’s leading event for cinematographers, chose not to sidestep the divisive role of AI. Instead, the opening ceremony at the Jordanki Culture Centre in Toruń featured a humanoid robot named “Edward Warchocki” delivering the opening address. The android, which spoke in Polish, was later joined on stage by festival director Marek Żydowicz for a discussion on the technology’s impact on filmmaking.

    AI and the Opening Film

The theme of artificial intelligence permeated the three-hour ceremony. Video messages from prominent filmmakers including Francis Ford Coppola, Gal Gadot, Christopher Nolan, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Steven Spielberg, and Ben Affleck addressed the audience, each offering their perspective on AI in entertainment.

The opening night film, Luca Guadagnino’s “Artificial,” continued this focus. The movie, described as an origin story for OpenAI, stars Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman and Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever. Guadagnino and cinematographer Malik Hassan Sayeed took the stage to discuss the film. Sayeed described AI as “just a tool, like any other,” while Guadagnino, who shot the film on 35 mm film, focused on the concentration of economic and political power held by tech leaders.

Neon is scheduled to release “Artificial” in the United States on December 25.

    Honors for Aronofsky and Kamiński

Darren Aronofsky received the festival’s honorary Award for Director. Aronofsky, who launched an AI studio called Primordial Soup last year, has been a vocal advocate for generative AI in filmmaking. He told the audience that he returns to Camerimage because it celebrates the collaboration of everyone involved in film production, rather than just highlighting famous names.

Polish cinematographer Janusz Kamiński, a two-time Oscar winner for “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan,” received The Hollywood Reporter Visionary Award. Kamiński is a longtime collaborator of Steven Spielberg.

Other honorees included actress Karolina Gruszka, who received the Marshal of the Kujawy Pomorze Region Film Award. Gruszka, known for her role in David Lynch’s “Inland Empire,” paid tribute to the late director as a master investigator of stories.

Tribute to Kraków and Andrzej Wajda

The festivities began with a minute of silence for the victims of a mass shooting in Kraków earlier that day. A gunman suspected of far-right ties drove into the city’s historic Main Market Square and opened fire. Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that at least six people were killed and more than a dozen injured, with three additional bodies later found at the suspect’s home, making it one of the deadliest shootings in Poland’s recent history.

The festival also honored the centenary of the birth of Polish director Andrzej Wajda. The Polish Radio Choir Łuśławice performed an a cappella reinterpretation of music from Wajda’s most important films. The Senate of Poland has declared 2026 The Year of Wajda.
