Former Secret Service Agent Critiques Security Lapses at Trump Rally

A recent attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania has raised significant concerns about security protocols. Former Secret Service agents have weighed in, highlighting potential lapses and suggesting improvements for future events.

    The Incident and Immediate Response

On Saturday, July 13, a gunman identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, opened fire from a rooftop approximately 130 yards away from the stage where Trump was speaking. Crooks was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and managed to fire several shots, one of which grazed Trump’s ear. Tragically, one rally attendee was killed, and two others were critically injured before Secret Service snipers neutralized the shooter.

    Security Lapses and Critiques

Former Secret Service agent Anthony Cangelosi emphasized the importance of “360-degree coverage” by counter-snipers at such high-profile events. According to Cangelosi, a comprehensive “site plan” is crucial, detailing the layout of the event space and surrounding buildings. “The primary question law enforcement would likely be asking is how the suspect could have made it to the top of a nearby building undetected,” Cangelosi told Business Insider.

It took 5 seconds, 27 milliseconds for the Secret Service snipers to return fire & take out the #Trump shooter.

Secret Service reaction was a failure. They were looking for the threat (thx to reports of the threat), but still failed to takeout the threat BEFORE Trump was hit. pic.twitter.com/qf91ui7tZL

Cangelosi, now an adjunct professor at the John Jay School of Criminal Justice, believes that the event’s site plan will be pivotal in understanding what went wrong. This plan includes the positioning of personnel, their duties, and the security measures for the outer perimeter, particularly the buildings surrounding the event.

According to all available video of the assassination attempt of President Trump — these Secret Service Snipers had eyes on the target for over a minute — maybe more?!

Yet they let the Left-Wing assassin crawl into position and fire on Trump!?

The Role of Local Law Enforcement

The Secret Service has placed some responsibility on local law enforcement for the security breach. Anthony Guglielmi, a Secret Service representative, stated that local police were tasked with securing the perimeter and surrounding properties, including the rooftop from which Crooks fired. However, residents near the rally site reported no contact from law enforcement before or during the event, raising questions about the coordination and communication between agencies.

Here is the latest information from our investigation. We are grateful to the Secret Service team and our law enforcement partners for their swift action. Our thoughts go out to the families affected by this tragedy. pic.twitter.com/E8FazqtUVZ

Former Secret Service Special Agent Melanie Burkholder also pointed out that while the Secret Service typically takes the lead on security, it heavily relies on local partners. “There’s only about 7,500 Secret Service agents, that’s not enough to fulfill our mission,” Burkholder explained, noting that local law enforcement, sheriff’s departments, and the military often supplement security details.

    Investigative and Political Fallout

In the wake of the shooting, multiple federal agencies, including the FBI, have launched an investigation to piece together the shooter’s movements and motives. The FBI has confirmed that Crooks acted alone and used his father’s gun. They are still investigating how he managed to evade security and reach the rooftop undetected.

    🚨🚨🚨

I have already contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and am also calling on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing. The Oversight Committee will send a formal invitation soon.

The incident has prompted calls for a thorough review of the Secret Service’s protocols. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky) has announced plans to have Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testify before the committee. Additionally, Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) has accused Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of denying requests for increased Secret Service protection for Trump, a claim that Mayorkas has denied.

    Moving Forward

Former President Trump has expressed gratitude towards law enforcement for their swift response and extended condolences to the victims. As Trump prepares to speak at the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin next week, the Secret Service is expected to heighten security measures to prevent similar incidents.

“The Secret Service is well aware of the fact that they have to be perfect all of the time,” Cangelosi remarked. “And the one time you’re not, it’s going to bring increased scrutiny.”

This incident underscores the critical need for meticulous planning and robust collaboration between federal and local law enforcement to ensure the safety of public figures and attendees at large events.
