A horrific act of violence unfolded on Sunday morning in Brooklyn, New York, leaving residents stunned and calling for justice. A Guatemalan illegal migrant, identified as 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta, was arrested after allegedly setting a sleeping woman on fire inside a subway car, watching as she burned to death. This “depraved” attack, described by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch as one of the most heinous crimes imaginable, occurred at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station around 7:30 a.m.

Subway Fire New York: A Shocking Crime Scene

The incident took place on an idling F train at the Stillwell Avenue station. As the train pulled into the platform, Zapeta allegedly approached the victim, a motionless woman sitting at the end of a subway car. Using a lighter, he set her clothing ablaze, engulfing her in flames within seconds.

Patrolling officers were alerted by smoke and followed it to the scene. Despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead on-site. Video evidence shows the suspect sitting calmly on a nearby bench, watching the victim burn, before attempting to leave the platform.

Who Was The New York Subway Fire Suspect Sebastian Zapeta?

Zapeta is a Guatemalan migrant who arrived in the United States in 2018. Authorities are still investigating the legality of his migrant status and background. His motives for the crime remain unclear, but officials have labeled the act as a homicide.

After the gruesome attack, body-worn cameras captured clear images of Zapeta, which were shared with the public. Hours later, three high school students recognized the suspect on another F train and alerted authorities.

The incident has reignited debates about migrant policies, subway safety, and the growing concerns over violent crime in New York City’s public transportation system.

Transit officers acted swiftly, halting the train at the Herald Square station in Manhattan. They boarded the subway, located Zapeta, and arrested him without further incident. The suspect was reportedly wearing the same clothing as during the attack and was found carrying a lighter.

NYPD officials praised the cooperation between the public and law enforcement. Commissioner Tisch thanked the students for their quick thinking, stating, “They saw something, said something, and did something.”

Safety Concerns Raised For Woman New York Subway

The attack has sent shockwaves through New York City, particularly as it comes just days before the holidays. Mayor Eric Adams condemned the act as “depraved behavior” with no place in the city’s subways. He extended prayers to the victim’s family and commended the efforts of those who aided in Zapeta’s arrest.

Grateful to the young New Yorkers and transit officers who stepped up to help our NYPD make a quick arrest following this morning's heinous and deadly subway attack.

This type of depraved behavior has no place in our subways and we are committed to working hard to ensure there… https://t.co/TWs3iaC099

“This type of heinous crime highlights the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation,” Adams said.

Governor Kathy Hochul also addressed the tragedy, emphasizing the state’s efforts to improve subway safety. Her recent initiative to install cameras in every subway car played a pivotal role in identifying and apprehending the suspect.

Make no mistake: any crime is one too many, even with subway crime going down.

We are continuing to surge personnel and resources to make our subways safer.

A Tragic Reminder of Subway Dangers

New York City’s subway system has long been a lifeline for millions of commuters but has faced increased scrutiny due to high-profile incidents of violence. Despite a reported 10% drop in subway crime this year, cases like this underscore the challenges of ensuring safety in public spaces.

The senseless subway fire in New York, resulting in the brutal murder of an innocent woman, serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within urban transit systems. While the arrest of Sebastian Zapeta brings some closure, the incident leaves behind a grieving city and renewed calls for action to prevent such tragedies from illegals immigrants in the future with the Trump’s administration for the new border czar that will soon take office in 2025.

The NYPD has urged anyone with additional information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or crimestoppers.nypdonline.org.
