The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series is entering its final year of major software support, marking the end of an era for devices released before Samsung significantly expanded its update commitments. According to Engadget, the Galaxy Tab S9, S9+, S9 Ultra, S9 FE, and S9 FE+ will receive the One UI 9 update, based on Android 17, this year. These devices launched in 2023 with One UI 5.1 on Android 13, carrying a promise of four major operating system upgrades and five years of security patches.
End of the Line for Older Samsung Tablets
While the Tab S9 series is still receiving its final major upgrade, other models have already reached their limit. The Galaxy Tab S8, S8+, and S8 Ultra, which arrived in February 2022, already received their last major OS upgrade with One UI 8, based on Android 16. These devices will continue to receive security updates until February 2027.

The budget-friendly Galaxy Tab A9 and A9+, released in October 2023, have also received their final major OS update. Android 16 is the last major upgrade for these tablets, likely due to their positioning in the lower-end market. Despite this, they will continue to receive security patches for another year.
Newer Models Benefit from Extended Support
Samsung has shifted its strategy for newer devices, offering much longer software support cycles. The Galaxy Tab S10 series, launched in 2024, was the first to introduce a seven-year policy for both OS and security updates. This commitment extends to the Galaxy Tab S11 and S12 models, as well as the budget-oriented Galaxy Tab A11 and A11+ released in 2025.
Business-focused devices also follow distinct update schedules. The Galaxy Tab Active5, launched in 2024, comes with a four-year commitment to Android OS updates and five years of security patches. Since it shipped with Android 14, it is expected to receive updates through Android 18, with security patches continuing until 2029.

Users who do not see the One UI 9 update on their device immediately should not be concerned. Rollout schedules vary by model and region. To check for pending updates, users can navigate to Settings, select Software update, and tap Download and install.
