Menopause Matters, a support group based in South Cumbria, is organizing a free online forum to address the physical challenges of menopause. The event coincides with World Menopause Day, which carries the theme “Chronic Pain At Midlife” this year.

Leigh Williams, the group’s facilitator, stated that the session aims to open up conversations about pain and menopause. The online discussion is scheduled for Sunday between 19:00 and 20:00 BST. Williams was inspired to lead the group after experiencing perimenopause and chronic pain herself.

    Breaking Down Barriers to Conversation

Williams noted that many women feel desperate for an outlet to discuss these topics. She explained that some participants have not been able to talk about their symptoms or receive the support they need. The goal is to create a space where women can share their experiences without judgment.

The event will feature an open conversation format rather than a traditional expert panel. Participants will include a general practitioner, a pelvic health physiotherapist, a local authority health professional, and individuals with lived experience of persistent pain. Williams emphasized that no single person has all the answers, which is why diverse perspectives are being brought together.

“What we’ve seen through the menopause cafe is that women’s experiences don’t fit neatly into boxes,” Williams said. “We might start with menopause and very quickly find ourselves talking about pain, sleep, mental health, stress or neurodiversity.”

Understanding the Scope of Chronic Pain

According to the International Menopause Society, almost three in four women experience joint or muscle pain during perimenopause. Women are also up to 70% more likely than men to experience chronic pain generally. Common symptoms include muscle and joint aches, stiffness, swelling, reduced strength, and pins and needles.

These symptoms can be similar to musculoskeletal pain or fibromyalgia. Williams pointed out that menopause affects 50% of the population, so a certain level of health support is expected. She noted that some women experience these symptoms for a decade, making long-term comfort a significant concern.

“Health and wellbeing isn’t just the absence of ill-health, it’s about being able to thrive and that’s what I’m striving for,” Williams added.

Menopause Matters also holds a monthly cafe-style drop-in in Barrow-in-Furness. This provides women with an informal environment to meet and connect. The online forum serves as a broader platform for those across the county who cannot attend in person.

Anyone wishing to take part in the free online conversation can reserve a space on the event’s booking website. The session is designed to be accessible and supportive for women seeking information and community regarding menopause pain.
