A new cocktail recipe offers a lively twist on the classic tequila sour by introducing the complex flavors of tamarind and star anise. The drink relies on the sweet-sour depth provided by rich tamarind chutney, which pairs effectively with the brightness of crisp apple juice.
Ingredients for the spiced tamarind apple sour
The recipe calls for a specific balance of spirits and mixers to achieve the desired flavor profile. The base spirit is 45ml of blanco tequila, with Olmeca Altos Plata suggested as a suitable option. To build the sour element, the recipe requires 25ml of apple juice and 25ml of fresh lime juice.

Sweetness is adjusted with 20ml of sugar syrup. The defining ingredient is half a teaspoon of tamarind chutney, for which any decent brand is acceptable. To create a smooth foam texture, the recipe includes one egg white, or alternatively, three drops of cocktail foamer. The drink is finished with a single star anise pod for garnish.
Preparation method
Preparing the cocktail involves a two-stage shaking process to ensure proper texture and temperature. First, all ingredients except the star anise are placed in a shaker. The mixture is shaken vigorously without ice. This dry shake is essential to set the egg white and build a smooth foam structure.

After the dry shake, a good handful of ice is added to the shaker. The mixture is shaken again until it is well chilled. The drink is then strained into a tumbler filled with fresh ice. Finally, the star anise is placed on top as a garnish before serving.
