Jonathan Glatzer has brought his sharp eye for character-driven drama to Silicon Valley with The Audacity, a new series on HBO Max. The show offers a pitch-black look at the tech industry, focusing on the greed and egos of its most powerful players. While it shares DNA with Glatzer’s work on Succession and Better Call Saul, it moves at a measured pace that prioritizes psychological depth over rapid-fire plot twists.

    Billy Magnussen as Duncan Park

The story centers on Duncan Park, a data analytics founder played by Billy Magnussen. Duncan leads Hypergnosis, a company on the verge of being acquired by a massive tech conglomerate. When Duncan leaks the news prematurely to inflate the price, the deal collapses. Desperate to restore his status, he turns to blackmail and surveillance, using privacy-hacking tools to spy on his wife’s boyfriend in their open marriage.

Magnussen delivers a wild-eyed performance that highlights Duncan’s moral decay. His character’s physical appearance, with fair curls piled atop his head, adds to the satirical tone. The show uses his looks to mirror the eccentricities often associated with tech leadership, creating a visual shorthand for the industry’s unique brand of arrogance.

    Satirizing Tech Culture

The series does not shy away from the absurdities of billionaire life. It mocks the performative spending, orthorexic diets, and ayahuasca ceremonies that define the valley’s elite. The dialogue is packed with one-liners that skewer the industry’s self-importance. In one scene, a Cupertino executive dismisses a Veterans Association partnership by comparing it to France helping someone set up a printer, noting only that they have much more money.

Other characters add to the critique. Zach Galifianakis plays Carl Bardolph, a reclusive CEO who misses the spotlight. Bardolph’s personal ethos, written on a napkin while on speed, is described as the logic of a cancer cell. This metaphor underscores the show’s view of infinite profit as a destructive force. The narrative also follows a teenage misfit who lives in wall cavities, serving as a dark mirror to the adult world that has abandoned him.

The Audacity review highlights how the show uses these elements to explore the perverse psychology of tech pioneers. It suggests that the products and platforms created by a small group of men have reshaped the world more than any political party. The series argues that this power has turned a small collection of towns south of San Francisco into a modern-day Camelot, built on shady dealings and ethical compromises.

While the show excels at wit, it also carries a melancholy undertone. It questions the longevity of the tech bro lifestyle and the potential for a dystopian future. The irony that survivors of such a collapse might return to an analogue existence is a recurring theme. The series invites viewers to consider the cost of the digital world we have built, even as it enjoys the spectacle of its own creation.
