United Airlines announced Friday that it will cease all operations to Tulum International Airport (TQO) in Mexico shortly after the holiday season. The decision marks the end of a brief chapter for the carrier at the destination, which opened to international passengers in March 2024.
In a statement, the airline explained that it makes “regular adjustments” to its flight schedule based on seasonality, demand, and other market factors. The move comes as air service to the region faces a significant contraction. According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, total flights from the United States to Tulum have dropped by more than 50% compared to two years ago.

Declining Demand at Tulum International Airport
Tulum International Airport was developed to provide a more direct link to the region’s resorts than the nearby Cancun International Airport (CUN), which is located more than two hours away by road. When it first opened, several carriers quickly added flights from major U.S. hubs, anticipating strong tourist traffic.
However, demand has not met initial projections. Delta Air Lines will now offer service to Tulum only from Atlanta this winter, having previously operated routes from Detroit and Minneapolis. American Airlines continues to fly from Dallas and Miami but has cut its Charlotte service. United’s exit removes another major carrier from the schedule, leaving the airport with significantly fewer options for American travelers.

United Expands San Francisco Hub with Virginia Routes
While reducing its presence in Mexico, United is increasing its footprint at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The carrier confirmed it will launch two new transcontinental routes connecting the Bay Area to Virginia. These additions represent the second round of SFO expansions for United in as many weeks.
Service to Richmond International Airport (RIC) will begin on March 28. Flights will operate twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays. On the same day, United will launch service to Norfolk International Airport (ORF), with flights running on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The expansion at SFO coincides with preparations for the opening of a new United Club later this year. The lounge will feature an outdoor terrace, adding to the amenities available to passengers at the West Coast hub. These new routes follow a recent announcement of three additional domestic services from the Bay Area, signaling a continued strategic focus on expanding connectivity from San Francisco.
