Cancer patients in Wales are facing life-threatening delays in diagnostic scans due to a severe shortage of radiologists, medical experts have warned. The Royal College of Radiologists reported that NHS Wales currently has 88 fewer radiologists than required, representing a 28% shortfall in staffing levels.

For the first time, the college has documented cases where patient conditions have deteriorated while waiting for essential tests. Radiologists are doctors who specialize in using medical imaging to diagnose and manage diseases, making their role critical in early cancer detection and treatment planning.

North Wales Faces Deepest Staffing Crisis

Data from the Royal College of Radiologists 2025 clinical radiology census reveals that north and west Wales are among the hardest hit areas in the UK. The region is experiencing a 42% shortfall in consultant radiologists, compared to a 22% deficit in south Wales. This disparity has created significant anxiety for patients who rely on timely imaging to monitor their health.

One primary driver of this crisis is the prevalence of recruitment freezes in Welsh radiology departments. In 2024, the radiology workforce in Wales grew by only 1.1%, a figure far below the UK average of 5%. Dr. Owen Nicholas, a consultant oncologist in Swansea and chair of the Welsh committee for the Royal College of Radiologists, stated that the situation is not improving and patients are now directly affected by the lack of staff.

Nicholas highlighted the emotional toll on clinicians who must tell anxious patients that results are unavailable due to missing reports. He noted that doctors are frequently forced to cancel appointments or delay treatment decisions because the necessary imaging analysis has not been completed.

    Patients Fear Treatment Failure

Patients in Gwynedd have shared their fears regarding the impact of these delays. Beverly Scott, a member of the Pwllheli and Pen Llŷn cancer support group, was diagnosed with ovarian and peritoneal cancer 14 years ago. Although medical trials and continuous treatment have kept her condition stable, she warned that delays in monitoring could allow the cancer to spread unnoticed.

Scott, who was originally given five years to live, emphasized the psychological burden of waiting. She said, “You are anxious to know has the cancer spread, and until you get those results, that is going round in your head all the while.” She added that in cases like hers, delays could cause the cancer to spread further, rendering subsequent treatments ineffective.

Karen Jones, another support group member diagnosed with breast and colon cancer, described the waiting period as “terrible, horrific and horrendous.” She noted that patients are left in total limbo, unsure if their treatment is working or if the disease has returned.

Health Board Response and Recruitment Efforts

Betsi Cadwaladr health board, which covers one of the most affected areas, acknowledged the staffing challenges. Clara Day, the executive medical director, said she understood that the figures could be very worrying for patients. The board stated it is actively recruiting for both radiology and oncology positions and is strengthening links with the North Wales Medical School to support future workforce development.

Day noted that the health board’s clinical strategy for oncology has led to key developments, including nurse-led clinics and specialized metastatic nurse teams. She added that partnering with a third-party provider has contributed to a decline in waiting times for scans and results since April, despite a substantial increase in demand for imaging services.

The board emphasized that robust arrangements are in place to prioritize patients according to clinical need and maintain safe services. However, the Royal College of Radiologists continues to urge immediate action to address the structural staffing deficits that are currently impacting patient outcomes across Wales.
