Microsoft released its monthly Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 on October 13, but the installation has introduced a glitch that disables a critical security feature. The bug affects the Smart App Control setting, which is designed to block potentially malicious or suspicious applications from running on a system. Users who attempt to enable the feature after installing the update will find the toggle button grayed out and unresponsive.
Smart App Control Disabled by Glitch
Smart App Control was added to Windows 11 in 2022 to provide a stronger layer of defense against emerging threats. It operates more strictly than other built-in security measures by preventing unknown or suspicious files from infecting the computer. According to reports, the issue only impacts users who have not yet activated the feature. If Smart App Control was already enabled before the update, it continues to function normally. However, for those with the setting turned off, the update removes the ability to turn it on.
Testing on multiple Windows 11 machines confirms the behavior. Computers that have received the October patch show the Smart App Control option as inactive and unclickable. In contrast, systems that have not yet installed the update retain the standard toggle functionality. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and stated that it is working on a correction for a future release.
Registry Workaround Restores Access
Until Microsoft issues a fix, users can manually restore the setting by modifying the Windows Registry. This process requires opening a command prompt with administrator privileges. To do this, type cmd in the search box and select the option to run as administrator.
Once the command prompt is open, enter the following commands one after the other. Each command adds a specific key to the FeatureManagement Overrides section of the registry.

reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides” /v 2883193997 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides” /v 2850574478 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
After entering each line, the system should display a confirmation that the operation completed successfully. Close the command prompt and restart the computer. Upon logging back in, navigate to Settings, Privacy & security, and Windows Security. Select App & browser control, then click Smart App Control settings. The On option should now be available for selection.
Enabling Smart App Control is generally recommended for users who download files from unfamiliar sources. The feature helps prevent unknown malware from infecting the system. The only drawback is that it may interfere with the installation of legitimate software from less common providers. Users can disable the feature if it causes too many interruptions, but keeping it active provides an additional shield against new threats.
