Pumpkin, a rescue cat who arrived at SPCA Cincinnati in March, has captured the attention of millions online after her journey from severe obesity to a healthier lifestyle. The cat, who was found in a critical condition after her owner passed away, is now living with the shelter’s CEO, who adopted her after seeing her desperate need for help.
Severe Obesity and Rescue at SPCA Cincinnati
When Pumpkin arrived at the shelter, she weighed 25lb (11.3kg), a weight that made it difficult for her to walk. Her legs were bowed from the strain, and she moved with a noticeable waddle. During examinations, her breathing became so labored that she turned blue, indicating serious health risks associated with her condition.

The shelter’s CEO, who also serves as president of SPCA Cincinnati, recalled the moment they first met. “Speaking to her late owner’s daughter, we were able to piece together that Pumpkin was around five and had likely gained weight after two litters and some well-meaning overfeeding,” the CEO explained. Despite being dirty and having fleas, these were minor issues compared to the life-threatening obesity.
The CEO, a father of three cats, felt an immediate connection to Pumpkin. “Pumpkin had these massive, expressive eyes. She doesn’t miaow so everything is communicated through her alien-like gaze,” they said. “As she lay on her back on the exam table, she was unable to lift her head. Still, she locked eyes with me as if to say: ‘Help!'”
Adaptation and Social Media Fame
After bringing Pumpkin home, she was introduced to the CEO’s existing cats: Jerry, a loud black cat; Doe, a shy and sweet cat; and Dottie, a hunter who collects socks. The other cats quickly accepted Pumpkin, realizing she was too slow to be a threat. She could not jump on counters or climb spiral stairs, so she mostly slept on her bed while adjusting to a new diet.

When the CEO began posting videos of Pumpkin online, they expected only a few views. Instead, the videos went viral. People now stop the CEO on the street to ask if they are “Pumpkin’s dad.” Comments from followers express deep emotional connections, with many saying they would “die for her” and that her videos bring them healing.
Pumpkin’s health has improved significantly since her adoption. She has lost almost 3lb, her coat has become glossier, and she is now comfortable roaming the house. She can even climb onto the couch to lie with her feline siblings. The CEO attributes her progress to a better diet and the positive energy from her online fans.

To celebrate her progress, the family is planning a sixth birthday party for Pumpkin on Halloween. The CEO noted, “It’s always gratifying to help other people successfully foster and now I’ve experienced it myself. We have officially adopted her and decided to give her a very fitting sixth birthday party on Halloween.” Pumpkin’s story has not only enriched the CEO’s life but also provided inspiration to countless followers worldwide.
