Anthropic reported a significant increase in earnings for the third quarter, with revenue jumping 45% to $16.8bn (£12.7bn), according to BBC reporting. The figures were disclosed during a briefing for prospective investors on Wednesday, marking a key step in the company’s preparation for a public stock market listing.

The AI developer, known for creating the Claude language model, is targeting a debut before the end of the year. The financial data provides a clear view of the company’s rapid expansion and its ability to generate income from its artificial intelligence services.

    Anthropic revenue growth trajectory

The latest numbers continue a steep upward trend for the San Francisco-based firm. In the first three months of the year, Anthropic recorded revenue of $4.7bn. This figure rose to $11.6bn in the second quarter, setting the stage for the current quarter’s results. The company also reportedly informed investors that it had achieved profitability for the second consecutive quarter.

These financial metrics serve as a critical indicator for the broader artificial intelligence sector. The revenue figures from Anthropic and its primary rival, OpenAI, help gauge the industry’s capacity to fund the massive infrastructure costs required to develop and maintain advanced AI models.

    Market volatility and investor caution

The announcement comes amid a period of uncertainty for technology stocks. Shares in several major tech companies have declined recently, driven by concerns over the hundreds of billions of dollars being invested in AI infrastructure. Investors are questioning whether the current spending levels can be justified by immediate returns.

Chip manufacturers have been particularly affected. Shares in AMD, Nvidia, and Intel fell sharply on Wednesday. In Asia, the downturn was even more pronounced. Softbank dropped more than 9%, while South Korean semiconductor giants Samsung and SK Hynix saw their shares fall by 9.5% and 11% respectively. Trading on South Korea’s Kospi and Kosdaq indexes was temporarily halted after drops exceeding 8%, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 lost nearly 5%.

Market sentiment was further dampened by comments from Broadcom CEO Hock Tan. Speaking at a conference in Singapore, Tan suggested that many investors have unrealistic expectations regarding AI spending, comparing the current environment to a casino. This followed US inflation data released on Wednesday, which showed price rises accelerating more than expected in September. The data has increased the likelihood that the US Federal Reserve will raise borrowing costs, adding pressure to growth-oriented tech stocks.

    Competitor landscape and global expansion

While Anthropic moves toward a public listing, rival OpenAI has taken a different path. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in September that his company will not go public this year, citing the need to address safety concerns. OpenAI is still pursuing a stock market debut, with expectations that it could be valued at more than $1tn.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has also spoken publicly about the risks associated with AI development, calling for a slower pace of progress. Despite these cautionary notes, the company continues to expand its physical presence. Anthropic opened a new office in Singapore on Wednesday, signaling its commitment to global growth even as it navigates the complexities of the financial markets.
