The UK is bracing for a wetter and stormier autumn in 2026, a shift driven by the El Niño climate phenomenon, which is predicted to be the strongest in living memory. This weather pattern follows the hottest summer on record in the country, creating a sharp contrast in seasonal conditions. While staying dry is a practical necessity, the standard approach to wet-weather gear often involves single-use ponchos or flimsy umbrellas that break easily and end up in landfills.

Consumers are increasingly looking for alternatives that prioritize durability and circularity. The most sustainable options are products designed to last for years, made from recycled materials, and supported by brands that offer repair services or take-back schemes for worn-out items. From water-based sprays to wind-resistant umbrellas, here are the most effective ways to handle the rain with less waste.

    Outerwear and Circular Fashion Brands

Investing in high-quality outerwear is a key strategy for reducing environmental impact. Bam offers a lightweight trenchcoat that addresses the issue of textile waste by allowing customers to send the garment back to the brand for recycling once it wears out. The coat is available in three colors and represents a move toward a circular fashion system where the manufacturer retains responsibility for the product’s end-of-life.

For those needing warmth alongside protection, the Re-Pete Project offers a gilet constructed from fabric scraps sourced from a French mill known for military-grade textiles. The outer layer is made from 100% recycled waterproof polyamide, while the lining features Italian padding made from recycled polyester. The brand operates a take-back system where all garments can be returned to be remade or composted, depending on the material composition.

Finisterre provides a lightweight jacket that folds down small and is suitable for both men and women. While not technically a fully waterproof jacket, it has proven effective in keeping wearers warm and dry during sharp showers at outdoor events. The brand also offers more substantial waterproof raincoats for heavier downpours.

    Umbrellas and Headwear Solutions

Traditional umbrellas are often criticized for their lack of durability, but Soaked, a brand founded in Manchester, is challenging this norm. They produce resilient umbrellas featuring wind-resistant vented canopies made from recycled materials and flexible fibreglass ribs designed to withstand strong gusts. For those who find umbrellas cumbersome in crowded streets, L-Hood offers a shower-resistant hat that rolls up into a slap band. This accessory can be worn around the wrist or stored in a bag, providing hands-free protection from the rain.

Head protection does not always require a full jacket. A padded hood from the Re-Pete Project covers the head, neck, and chest, making it ideal for city commuters who need quick protection without the sweat factor of a full coat. Additionally, a British-made waxed cotton cap with a leather peak offers a classic solution for unpredictable weather. Designed specifically for outdoor use, the cap softens with age and is available in two colors.

    Footwear and Accessories

Keeping feet dry often starts with the right footwear and maintenance. Liquiproof is a water-based, aerosol-free spray that protects shoes and boots from rain, mud, oil, and other spills. It is safe for use on leather, suede, nubuck, and canvas, helping to maintain the appearance of favorite shoes without using harmful chemicals. For a more hands-on approach, a wash-in waterproofing product can restore water repellency to fabrics like Gore-Tex and Sympatex while maintaining breathability. This product is also Pfas-free and available as a spray.

Plasticana Gardana clogs have gained popularity for their fashion credentials, but they also serve a practical purpose as lightweight dog-walking shoes when wellies are too warm. For carrying essentials, a recycled bag with a Pfas-free water-resistant coating offers padded protection for laptops and other items. The bag includes compartments and a removable zip pouch for added security.

Finally, a unisex rain jacket that stores in its own bag offers practical features such as thumb straps and zipped pockets with rain flaps. This type of gear ensures that users can stay dry without compromising on style or functionality, addressing the common complaint that eco-friendly options are often less durable than traditional alternatives.
