Singapore Airlines launched its first direct flight to Madrid today, October 26, ending a 22-year absence from the Spanish capital. The new service, designated as flight SQ388, connects Singapore Changi Airport to Madrid Barajas Airport with a scheduled stopover in Barcelona. This route expansion marks the carrier’s 15th European destination and its second city served in Spain.
New Schedule and Aircraft Details
The inaugural flight departs Singapore at 11:30 PM local time. The outbound journey to Barcelona takes 14 hours and 10 minutes. After a one-hour ground stop in Barcelona, the aircraft continues its 70-minute flight to Madrid, arriving at 8:50 AM the following day. The total travel time from Singapore to Madrid is 16 hours and 20 minutes.
Singapore Airlines will operate this route five times per week using its Airbus A350-900 fleet. The aircraft configuration includes 253 seats divided into three cabins. Passengers can choose from 42 Business Class seats, 24 Premium Economy seats, and 187 Economy Class seats. The airline will not sell tickets for the Barcelona to Madrid segment alone. This service replaces the two weekly nonstop flights to Barcelona and the three-times-weekly service to Milan that ends on October 27.

Return Journey and Historical Context
The return flight, SQ387, departs Madrid at 10:00 AM. The aircraft spends 80 minutes on the ground in Barcelona before beginning its 12-hour and 50-minute journey back to Singapore. The total travel time from Madrid to Singapore is 15 hours and 25 minutes, which is nearly an hour shorter than the outbound trip.
Singapore Airlines last served Madrid in October 2004. During that previous era, the carrier used Boeing 747-400 aircraft that connected through Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. The airline first launched flights to Madrid in April 1992 using Boeing 747-300s, which also stopped in Paris or Amsterdam. The route was later upgraded to the Boeing 747-400 with connections via Paris before the service was discontinued.
Since 2004, passengers traveling from Singapore to Madrid have relied on codeshare connections with Star Alliance partners such as Lufthansa and Swiss. These connections often involve layovers in Munich or other hubs, resulting in total travel times that can approach 18 hours. The new direct service offers a more streamlined option for travelers seeking connectivity between Southeast Asia and Southern Europe.

Singapore Airlines has maintained a presence in Barcelona for over two decades. The carrier began serving the city in July 2006 with flights via Milan Malpensa Airport. Nonstop services to Barcelona started in March 2011 as part of a route to São Paulo, which ended in 2016. Nonstop flights to Barcelona resumed in June 2024. The addition of Madrid extends this network further into Spain.
The launch places Singapore Airlines in competition with several other Asian carriers already flying to Madrid. These include Air China, Beijing Capital Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Korean Air, Sichuan Airlines, and Uzbekistan Airways. The new route provides a direct link for business and leisure travelers who previously had to navigate complex multi-leg itineraries to reach the Spanish capital.
