A Chinese research team has claimed a new world record for real-time data transfer speeds across optical fiber cables. The collaboration, involving the National Key Laboratory of Optical Communication Technology, Network of China Information and Communication Technologies Group, Pengcheng Laboratory, and Fiberhome Fujikura Fiber Optic Technology Co., Ltd., achieved a throughput of 3.2 petabits per second (Pb/s). According to the Chinese government website for Hubei Province, this speed is sufficient to download more than 20,000 4K movies in a single second.

    Surpassing Previous Milestones

This new result significantly exceeds the 2.5 Pb/s record set by the same group earlier this year. The improvement represents an almost 30 percent performance uplift within a twelve-month period. The team utilized 24-core optical fiber cable for the test, demonstrating that the technology can handle massive data volumes in real-time conditions rather than just in controlled laboratory environments.

To put the magnitude of this speed into perspective, the researchers noted that such capacity could theoretically support 3.2 million households simultaneously enjoying gigabit broadband connections. This comparison offers a more practical understanding of the scale than the movie download metric, highlighting the potential impact on consumer internet infrastructure.

    Technical Breakthroughs and Hardware

The 3.2 Pb/s transmission was made possible through the use of spatial division multiplexing and S+C+L multi-band transmission technology. These methods allow multiple data streams to be sent simultaneously over the same physical medium by utilizing different spatial paths and light wavelengths. The researchers faced significant technical hurdles, including crosstalk interference and the need to manage varying specification requirements across the different transmission bands.

Crucially, the test was conducted using commercially compliant hardware architectures. This distinction separates the achievement from purely academic milestones. While other lab experiments have reached speeds of up to 5.29 Pb/s across similar 24-core telecommunications fiber, those results often rely on advanced or experimental signal processing and specialized laboratory equipment that may not be readily available for commercial deployment.

The use of standard-compliant hardware suggests that the technology is closer to practical application. The source indicates that the result could be deployable in the real world in the not-too-distant future, provided there is sufficient effort and will to implement the necessary infrastructure changes.

The record highlights the rapid evolution of optical communication technology. By moving beyond experimental setups and demonstrating high speeds with commercially viable components, the team has shown a clear path for upgrading existing fiber optic networks to meet growing global data demands.
