Dan Ayoub has been promoted to lead Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games, a move that places the former Halo executive in charge of some of the most valuable intellectual properties in the entertainment industry. Ayoub will oversee Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, Duel Masters, and the broader Hasbro Digital Games division.
Ayoub joins the leadership team after serving as senior vice president of digital games at Wizards of the Coast since 2024. His promotion marks a significant internal shift for the company, which stated that he was selected after a rigorous search evaluating dozens of internal and external candidates. He is the first internal candidate to be promoted into this specific role.
Leadership Changes and Key Projects
Ayoub replaces John Hight, who departed the position in July after a two-year tenure. The transition comes as Hasbro looks to stabilize its digital gaming strategy following a period of restructuring. Ayoub will directly manage two major video game projects currently in development: Exodus, a sci-fi role-playing game being built by Archetype Entertainment, and Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons, a third-person action-adventure title developed by Invoke Studios.
Before joining Wizards of the Coast, Ayoub held prominent roles in the video game sector. He served as executive producer and studio head at 343 Industries, the studio behind the Halo franchise. He also spent more than a year as vice president and general manager at co-development studio Certain Affinity. This background in large-scale game production is expected to inform his approach to the digital expansion of tabletop franchises.
In a statement regarding his new position, Ayoub expressed gratitude for the opportunity and outlined his priorities. He described Magic and Dungeons and Dragons as lifelong passions and emphasized a commitment to the creative teams behind these brands.
“I’m honored to lead Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games, and grateful to Chris [Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks] and the leadership team for this opportunity,” Ayoub said. “Magic and D&D have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and the teams behind them are among the best in the world. We’ll put fans first, respect the artists and creators who make these worlds come alive, and set an ambitious course for growth across tabletop and digital. I can’t wait to get started. “
Financial Context and AI Strategy
Ayoub assumes leadership during a challenging financial period for Hasbro. The company recently recorded a $56 million non-cash impairment charge earlier this year. This financial hit resulted from the cancellation of several games in development that were originally scheduled for release in 2028 and beyond. The cancellations highlight the difficulties Hasbro has faced in translating the success of titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 into a sustained pipeline of digital hits.
The company’s approach to emerging technologies also presents a complex environment for the new leadership. Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has been vocal about his views on artificial intelligence. While he noted that he is not currently pushing to incorporate generative AI into Hasbro games because consumers “just don’t want it,” he has also stated that widespread AI use is an inevitable future that the company cannot ignore.
Ayoub’s emphasis on respecting artists and creators in his inaugural statement may be viewed in light of these ongoing debates about technology and labor in the gaming industry. As Hasbro navigates the cancellation of past projects and the potential integration of new tools, Ayoub’s background in both traditional game development and digital strategy will be closely watched by industry observers.
