The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has approved Renoa, a new textile material developed by the startup Everbloom, marking the first time a new fiber classification has been recognized in 25 years. The approval allows the company to begin scaling production of the material, which is designed to replicate the feel of cashmere while addressing environmental concerns associated with traditional goat farming.

    Waste Protein Transformed into Textile

Renoa is created from waste protein sources, including scraps from cashmere and wool production, as well as down and feather lint leftover from the bedding industry. Everbloom processes these materials into a powder and blends them with a biodegradable biopolymer. The mixture is then extruded to specific lengths and diameters to mimic natural fibers.

The startup has spent three years developing the technology, utilizing a proprietary AI model for material science to optimize the fiber’s properties. The goal is to create a more affordable and durable alternative to expensive natural fibers that are often difficult to care for and carry significant environmental costs.

    Testing Durability and Market Entry

During a recent visit to Everbloom’s headquarters in New York City, co-founder and CEO Sim Gulati demonstrated the fiber’s durability using a custom-knit scarf. The item had been worn and washed repeatedly, including multiple cycles in a tumble dryer, without pilling or shrinking. This stability contrasts with pure cashmere, which often requires delicate handling to maintain its shape and texture.

Everbloom is currently collaborating with various companies to integrate Renoa into consumer products. The initial releases will likely feature the new fiber as a blend, comprising approximately 20 percent of the material in garments such as cashmere sweaters. According to Gulati, the first products containing the blend are expected to reach the market in the second quarter of 2027.

Early tests suggest that an 80/20 cashmere-Renoa blend feels nearly identical to pure cashmere. Gulati noted that additional finishing processes used in commercial garment manufacturing should eliminate any remaining differences without compromising the washability or stability of the final product.
